The TV Thread redux

Amazing skill, but like a lot of the impressive acts, it’s not something I could see being turned into a 2 hour show, which is often one of the prizes in these things.
I wonder if she can do a variety of things like this or if it’s all ‘just’ balancing things on top of each other (which was very impressive)

I watched this on Netflix last night:

If you have read the book and/or seen the 1930s film then this takes a somewhat different narrative. Whereas the book has the full sweep of the war and includes details of the inadequate basic training and the daily grind of trench survival, this film concentrates on events at the very end of the war after the German revolution and with the generals knowing full well the pointlessness of fighting.

I’m not sure whether the English title “All Quiet On The Western Front” is still entirely appropriate but the futility of war message is still strong.

Possibly this could be seen as a companion piece to 1917. I’d definitely recommend both.

Just watching an episode of Battle Creek, one of my favourite cop shows. I was so disappointed this never got a second season.

Im not seeing the same positives about Andor as others, but even to me it’s pretty clear it’s a completely different, more thoughtful and meaningful production than everything else that has come before in the Disney era, save for Rogue One.

With that in mind, this is a pretty accurate and depressing take on the recent expansion of the Star Wars library.

Isnt it by the same people who worked on Rogue One?

Rogue One had pretty significant reshoots and the guy Disney brought in to write those new scenes is the main guy in charge in this. Supposedly those reshoots were about making it bleaker and focused on making the original Disneyish ending be more realistic, so the continuity of tone is understandable.

When you look at his writing credits, stuff like Michael Clayton and the original Bourne, you can see why there is such a divergence from the other SW stuff.

Just out of interest: What don’t you like about it? Or do you mean reviews?

Re-watching Breaking Bad after recently finishing Better Call Saul (the actual best prequel of 2022).

Fantastic book and I liked the old film when I watched it ages ago, might give this new one a try.

Just finished the second season of Babylon Berlin. It’s great, neo-noir fans will love it. My level of perception has perhaps dulled over the years but I’m convinced that the level of detail in scene and costume design is incredible.

They’re all good, but Season 2 was the best imo, actually watched it twice. One out of maybe 3 German series that I would recommend to people.

What’s the other one (besides Dark)?

Heimat. Although that’s a pretty niche series, probably not for everyone’s taste to put it mildly

Hmm, if one of the other two is Dark, which is the third one?

By the way, the final two episodes of season 2 were a masterpiece in storytelling. I’m a sucker for noir but I can’t believe how tense it made me feel (the Benda arc especially).

I can’t put my finger on it, but I think there is just a general sense of lacking that excitement of looking forward to the next episode the way the best tv has. There is a lot I like about it, especially the more mundane bits…this is people just living their lives under the yoke of a new fascist regime…but it just doesnt have that thing that hooks me in. I’ve seen people say that it watches more like a film than a tv series, and so maybe it lends itself more to a long binge than watching 45 minutes segments every week.

After drinking my bodyweight in German beer last week at a Slovak wedding, I’m watching the Oktoberfest one right now. It’s beautifully terrible.

I think I mentioned it before, but for fans of Dark the writers have a new one coming out in the next couple of weeks. It’s about a an cruise ship travelling from London to NYC in 1899 that crosses path with another cruise liner on the way and cue Dark like spooky shit

See above. It’s an old series from the 80s, sort of a family story that chronics the lives of people from this fairly remote, rural and poor village over decades. Fascinating, but tbh it was a fairly challenging watch back in the day, modern audiences would probably consider it torture.
Interestingly over the years I’ve had a couple of people from the UK bring this up to me, apparently it ran on the BBC.

It did have a cult following on BBC Two. I think I watched an episode but it wasn’t quite my thing.
