Chiesa was worth/we were quoted a huge sum, north of 100M, a couple of years ago. He was an excellent player.
He had an injury, and what I don’t know is how far he has fallen from his best level. If it’s not much, he could be a canny acquisition if the price is low to mid.
However, the Prem is a notch up in physicality from Serie A, and if he isn’t fully tip-top, it would be a waste of time.
Hopefully we have the people, and the means, to make the best decision with regard to this tantalizing possibility.
He’s young and has a lot of potential still too come.
I would prefer a season loan to a Premier League team with the chance to recall him in January if he isn’t getting the right level of game time (that is something for Slot and Hughes to decide what the target needs to be). Lets see how he goes in the Premier League but not risking our goals and campaign. We can then see where he is at next summer and decide if we keep or sell.
Liverpool have now returned from their pre-season tour of the U.S. They take on Sevilla in a pre-season game at Anfield on Saturday, and for fans in attendance, as it stands, it will only be familiar faces on the pitch.
Arne Slot is yet to welcome a new arrival since taking over as Liverpool’s manager but has been calm about the situation.
However, Slot used Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch in the No 6 position during their tour — in which Liverpool won all three of their games. Despite Slot praising Gravenberch’s performance in the friendly against Manchester United, Liverpool have now identified a target in that position.
It is worth keeping an eye on that situation this week, with Liverpool pursuing a specialist No 6 from outside of the Premier League.
They have turned down bids for Endo this summer, in part because of the tricky market in that position, but are now moving ahead with a signing for that role.
Ornstein seems quite certain of our interest, which is good. Any thoughts on who the mystery player could be?
No idea at this point. I’ve got used to thinking of a Liverpool 6 as your destroyer/battler type. Under Klopp that made sense as we were perhaps less structured in our midfield with a 1-2 split. The fullbacks bombed on and we needed that ‘blocker and tackler’ type that Fabinho was.
If Slot is thinking more of a 2-1 set up in midfield and the players are talking about more structured play in the centre of the park then perhaps that 6 is more Alonso and less Mascherano in nature.
Would put the like of Zubimendi in the picture maybe.
Get in! Our midfield imbalance has been obvious, and I’m glad the club has seemingly identified someone. Will be interesting to see what happens with the remaining bunch i.e. Endo, Gravenberch.
Even though I’d love it to be Ugarte, I think we would’ve moved for him much earlier given his availability.
