Who exactly would you like to be our backup LB, with the standard being that they would do a good job against Mbappe or Vinicius Jr?
You have a better point if you think that Tsimikas will struggle against the average PL quality winger. Mbappe and Vinicius will have success whoever they play against.
Which is interesting because pretty much every season he has had since he left Austria he has had some period of the season where he was struggling physically. It may not show up fully in the injury data, but at minimum he’s had periods of being in a funk while trying to play through a niggle.
Enter Tyler Morton, I guess. His move to Leverkusen was denied yesterday, so I presume it’s because the club knew at that point they wouldn’t be able to sign anyone for that role in this transfer window.
As a side note, I assume this will be revisited in a year’s time, so Bajčetić should have some extra motivation to do well on loan because if he proves he can cut it at Salzburg at his age, Slot and Hughes will surely consider him an option for DM/CM, even if “only” as Endo’s permanent replacement in the squad.
I think we have got rid of our cover for our cover.
I went into the summer assuming we would do something at CB, but mainly because the noise around Gomez made it seem like we were going to need a replacement for him. With him staying the situation is different. I understand why people would want another CB, but there are plenty of good reasons we’d think that as long as Slot is happy with his current 4 we would be best served putting it off for another year.
Maybe we’re confident in Virgil retaining his form and extending his stay, making the profile we’re after different than if its as replacement for him.
Confidence in the output from our statistical models is a key component of our evaluation process, and that is largely a function of the player under consideration having played enough games at a high enough standard. We typically need a data set of a minimum of 100 games to be confident enough in a positive evaluation of a player to sanction a first team move. But the confidence is also weighted by the level of the competition (French league less than prem, UEFA competition better than most domestic leagues). It is entirely possible to imagine a scenario where we have a player or two we really like but need another year of data before we can get behind sanctioning a move for someone we’ve earmarked as a replacement for Virgil, or to justify pushing out Gomez. If you dont like the group you have already then you need to be more willing to act on whatever you can get now. But if you like your players, then this is the sort of strategy you can use to maximize your success in the market compared to moving now on a player who ultimately wasnt what you thought he was, or you settle for someone less fancied but more well known.
