They aren’t selling Joe. They need him right now. If anything, they need to sign a CB.
Newcastle aren’t going to win the league and we’re a threat to their top four chances, so it makes sense the Saudis would do this. It’s no coincidence the Salah rumours surfaced, three days before our game with Newcastle.
No reason to think Gomez will be going anywhere. He’s the first one to cover three positions on the defensive line, and yesterday he showed how good he actually can be when he’s playing well.
The problem for us is that if there’s an injury to Trent (or a straight red which apparently is the PGMOLs new strategy for us), he’s the one starting. And If we have virg konate and trent out, we have to start a youth player, and thats just not good enough. None of us wants a repeat of 2020, and the people in charge need to find a good solution. No Ben Davies or Arthur Melo 2.0s but a real solution to our problems that makes our team stronger in depth and has some real added value.
I understand that working within the market atm is not easy: the transfer fees are inflated, we have our scarce business model, demand is way higher than supply etc.But we should be employing the best in the business when it comes to transfers, and if they will not make the squad better before next week, changes in the transfer department are needed. End of.
£30m and sell.
Sign someone like Debast or Theate and push Quansah.
Saves us having to witness Joe’s inevitable blunders over the course of the season and gives us with one thing less to do next summer.
Job done.
We’d be mad to do this.
Just go and buy the centre back we need, let Nat go and don’t give Quansah the baptism of fire given the inevitable injuries and suspensions will result in.
Matip is gone next summer anyway. We know this already. Get a replacement in place now and if they surpass Joe and he wants out next summer too then worry about it then.
But right now the only CB we should be entertaining offers for is Phillips and even then only if we actually have someone lined up.
If you really think about it, I’m not so sure we would be.
4 CB’s is all any side needs so long as they’re dependable and trustworthy options.
Nat doesn’t even enter the equation at this point and hasn’t done for a few years now, in my mind he’s not even a Liverpool player even if technically he’s still “registered on our books”, it’s pretty apparent Klopp has no use for him in any capacity.
Matip…we’ll come to Matip when the time is right, for the next few days if we get our heads screwed on and act, there’s still a lot of time to move some pieces around and IF this interest from Ittiwhoever is genuine then send him away and get 1 of the options above or someone else is we can bed in, it shouldn’t be that difficult.
Gomez is a good player and we should absolutely keep hold of him. He covers central defence and right back, is fast, strong, has good experience, and is home grown.
He did very well against a tricky Newcastle side yesterday.
If we buy someone like Theate, he bumps ahead of Matip in the pecking order, and it’s up to him to prove he is better than Gomez. Either way, with Konate’s niggly injury record and Van Dijk’s age, there would be plenty of games for Gomez and Theate/whoever we buy.
so high on the list theyve had all summer to bid but forgot…
Leaving us to only witness TAA’s, VVD, insert Liverpool defenders name inevitable blunders over the course of the season.
I appreciate that Joe has been guilty of more than a few sloppy mistakes over the last couple of seasons but who hasn’t?
He is a very accomplished defender, athletic, composed and can play RCB and RB. If Joe is happy with his current squad status I see no reason to sell. With Joe I think it is very much a confidence thing/ lack of game time since his injury. I would personally give him game time in the Europa league games and take it from there.
He is still only 26, Matip is 32 and as much as I like him, he is not as athletic as Joe and Konate playing the covering RCB needed when Trent steps into midfield.
Regarding the two signings you suggested, i would rather go with your 3rd suggestion and give Quansah an opportunity.
Anyhow, we will see. What ever happens, hopefully it will be for the best
I wouldn’t want us to sell anyone as there seems to be a reluctance to spend a bit over if they want a player which is fine but I wouldn’t want to sell say Gomez and Salah and have Klopp going well Quansah is a great kid and Doak is ready.
He isn’t going to do that like but if anything is to happen between now and deadline day it has to be incoming (bar loans or Phillips).
50m and he’s theirs. Nat Phillips I.e
But that would mean way less clicks baits.
To get a nice fee for Gomez would be brilliant, but even with him you’d argue we need to bring in a CB, let alone without him. It would come to a point where we could ask yourselves what are we doing here…
We’d be left way too thin at the back, and we fans still don’t know if Bradley is going to remain with us this season and be good enough or loaned out again.
It would be similar to the mistake we made in 2020, when we didn’t replace Lovren and went into that season with 3 main CB’s.
Phillips is not good enough to be viewed as a main CB and it’s too early to call Quansah as such also. Matip is in the last year of his deal and doesn’t look good for a while now. Konate still can’t complete a season where he plays more than 30-40 games.
Don’t know if we will be able to sign a quality defender (let alone two!) as replacement in the final few days.
Just hope that our defence doesn’t become our new “midfield” when it comes to problems and needing to add multiple new players in a short space of time.
You don’t have to think that hard to realise it would be a terrible idea. For a start Gomez is our right back cover so if we’re flogging him then who plays right back when Trent needs a break or we want to go more compact? He’s also homegrown so unless we’re getting someone else who qualifies as that then that’ll be our non-homegrown quota full.
And you’re right, four centre backs should be enough if they are dependable and trustworthy. But, as we’ve seen with both Konate and Matip, both are less than dependable when it comes to injuries. Gomez has had his issues too but they’ve tended to be less frequent but more significant ones rather than the niggles the other two succumb to on a regular basis.
Nat does come into the equation. There must be two or three occasions where we’ve expected him to leave only for an injury to someone else to mean we want to keep him around. Maybe Quansah has leapfrogged him in the pecking order now but Klopp has kept him round for a reason.
Why wait for Matip to go to think about replacing him? If we’re open to bedding someone else in then get them now, keep Matip and Gomez and look to phase the new bloke in so we’re ready for Matip leaving next summer. It’s not as if there aren’t going to be plenty of opportunities for a 5th centre back to play given injuries, suspensions, Gomez also being RB cover and the fact we could play 60 odd games this season.
Selling Gomez now is simply a non-starter and shouldn’t even be entertained.
It’s a good point. What kind of signal would it send out to rival clubs and the Saudi’s if we keep selling off players to them when they come asking. We’re getting annoyed at the links to Salah, Diaz, Alisson etc but then there are fans who are keen to flog off anyone they don’t rate to these Saudi clubs.
We’d be very much encouraging their pursuit of our players in a way that I think sets a dangerous precedent. Not to mention what it does to the players who are here? Are they thinking they might be next we’d entertain offers for? Are they wondering which team mate might be next? Are they thinking we’re sacrificing the season somewhat in order to rebuild the squad?
I wasn’t thinking so much about players leaving for Saudi, but us selling so many players in one window without properly replacing them. There’s maybe a hidden limit how much offloading is even good for us this summer for the coming season, even if Saudi represents a place to sell certain players for which we might struggle to get similar interest/money from Europe.
Selling Gomez right now would be stupid:
A) We have enough issues with home-grown rules
B) We are struggling to add one CB that fits us, let alone 2 especially if one of them probably needs to be home-grown
C) They should have come earlier. Selling should be on our terms - period. This type of sale would not benefit us at all.
I think we are discussing point which are not happening and are just bullshit media rubbish. I guess with no genuine targets, they are just stirring the pot.
No one else is coming in, well, top class anyway. Too late in window for top notch players moving that their clubs cannot replace.
Douglas Luiz and Gravenberch appear to be the flavours of the day for links to Liverpool.
No CB’s though!
