I think he has shown he can do a job off the flank, and has put in a few decent performances there.
Obviously not at the level of the front three, and my preference would still be get in another specialist wide player.
If I was looking at moving on one of Origi or Brewster, before deciding to shift Divock, being able to stick him on the wing in an emergency is one of the things that might give me pause for thought.
While I was typing that I wondered if Klopp might feel it’s an option to play Robertson and Tsimikas on the left, maybe in the Dortmund 4411 he’ll occasionally go to. Have no idea who would be the more advanced.
On Minamino, not for me. I think he’s less effective off the left than Origi is.
Yeah that was my thinking, from what I’ve seen of Tsimikas he certainly has a bit of attacking flair.
I don’t agree about Taki though, in pre-seaon he played on the left and did much better than him trying to learn the Bobby 9 and a 10 role! (I think he is suited to playing in a 4231 in fact).
Liverpool are understood to still be preparing a late raid for Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcântara . The Premier League champions have been front-runners for the 29-year-old’s signature for a while, but will wait till the last knockings of the current transfer window to launch their bid, TalkSport tells us. Having seen his side ship three goals in slightly scattergun fashion at the weekend, Jürgen Klopp is also interested in the Sampdoria centre-back Omar Colley . The 27-year-old Gambia international, valued at €5m, has played 52 times for the Serie A side since signing from Genk in 2018.
Nothing new about Thiago, but haven’t seen the name Colley before. Doesn’t give the source of the rumor, but 5 mil Euro for a CB nobody has heard of before is about what I would expect if we sign a CB this summer.
I absolutely love Colley and he’s precisely the type we are looking for as depth. I was going to mention him over the Summer. Gambian, experienced, big and still mobile, latter stages of his career. Would be a perfect depth choice off the bench IMO.
Great post. This is exactly where I come out on Origi also, and it’s a mildly complicated relationship to have. Big Div can be very frustrating to watch for large stretches, then he does something massive that ultimately erases all of that previous frustration.
Stylistically, he can be really hard on the eyes. Does not move overly graceful, not at all a good ball carrier, I’m not even sure how well he can even pass the ball. Having said all that, he seems to have an uncanny ability to produce. When all is said and done, like you say, he pots big goals in big spots. I don’t know how much of a “quantifiable asset” that truly is, but it’s there. I suppose he’s a supreme case of substance over style.
even in klopp’s first season, i thought div had one of his best, most complete performances away to dortmund, in what seemed like a huge test for the players klopp inherited
I think part of the problem is that everyone expected him to kick on from there and maintain that level of performance consistently. But whether it was because of the occasion, or because of that injury against Everton, he hasnt. Shame really. Brilliant performance though.
Re Brewster. I just feel that he improved a lot after last Jan and under Klopps tutelage could improve more.I understand the arguments re pace, physique etc. but feel that he is just something different to what we have and would be a useful player to bring on to change things when we are struggling for a goal.
If we were to invest in another potential game changer then by all means sell him but frankly I do not see us spending the money required.
Agree. If he isn’t going to fit the way we play or wants to play centrally rather than wide then he’s a prospect that’ll not have the chance to improve.
We’d be better moving him on now with a buy back clause in place and bringing in a prospect that does fit better that we can develop.
I doubt that would be someone as established as Sarr but moving Brewster on and bringing in someone like Jeremy Doku would be alright by me. I think we’d use him more than Brewster, we’d invest more in his development because he gets more game time and we wouldn’t be holding Brewster’s career development back.
Would be a shame to see Rhian go but at this point he’s done no more than Ollie Watkins and I don’t think any of us would be clamouring to pay £25m for him.
