We hit it with a top class central defender and goal keeper relatively recently. FYI it got us Champions League and Premier League titles. Sometimes splashing out does you no harm at all. FFS, man cheaty would back in the first division without it
Yep itās not about the amount spent its about how well planned out and understood the move is by all parties involved. But shouldnāt be ignored that we were a team struggling to make Champions League before Klopp and our (extremely good and reliable) recruitment department spent over Ā£320m in two years breaking not just club records but world records on GK and CB in the process. That helped give Klopp the tools he needed to make that good side a fucking phenomenal side that made two CL finals winning one and two 90+ point PL seasons (surprisingly only) winning one. The idea that we should somehow turn our noses up at big spending is strange to me. As long as we continue to do it intelligently and sustainably it isnāt just OK itās probably essential to keep us at the top and winning and challenging for major honours. Without financial backing we end up like Klopps Dortmund after their Bundesliga wins. Pleasing on the eye, do reasonably well, but just out of reach of being able to challenge for major honours. Klopp canāt do it all alone on his skills and talent, best in the world but only human.
We were a team decimated by injuries last term and still came third. They are no way near us in reality. Who cares if they are in for Saul. Itās pure speculation on both teams whether either are interested. Agent talk as usual.
Yes but when have we not splash out when its deemed absolutely necessary? Its not news that we are positioning ourselves as short of money, having to sell to buy, this has always been the posturing that the owners, the club, the manager and Mikey always adopted every season in season out.
But like you said, when its time to splash on then world records on a GK and CB, when have we not? The difference is always what we deem necessary and what they, the experts, deem necessary. When its a player like VVD, they have shown we are willing to spend above what we wanted to. But when its a player like Saul, who is and could be a great player for us, I donāt think we will see him as a must have and will have options if indeed we are in for a CM. And GermanRed is right, these other clubs buy the flavours of the week and hope they hit the jackpot with one. We have a club that relies on data, a great manager, a good scouting system, a great coaching team, a great system and a great negotiator, to bring in the right players, and pay big money only if necessary, and then make them world class players.
Minus the Ā£142mill selling Coutinho,so Ā£178mill,then the other players we sold/loan feeās in those 2 years for around Ā£65mill aswell, thats Ā£113mill,so just over Ā£56mill spent a year over 2 years.
We didnāt go large, spend big and do a Man City,Chelsea or United,we spent wisely and played the market to build a team,FSG will unlock funds if they are available but wonāt jeopardise the clubs financial stability to play billy big bollocks and get into bidding wars with our competitors then lumber huge debts on the club, theyāve never done it since day one and i canāt see them doing it in the future either.
Right;
1; The fact we made money from player sales doesnāt change the fact we spent the money we did. Its not a dirty thing to spend money in this sport Iām not sure why people constantly feel the need to try and justify it.
2; We still broke transfer records, worldwide, on CB and GK, however you try to frame it it was not insignificant spending.
3; Around Ā£65m net spend per season is pretty damn good and far better than Klopp is ever likely to need even if the club made it available to him.
4; Has anyone ever suggested we didnāt spend wisely? Yet again I donāt understand this constant need to justify us spending money like its some form of immoral act. Yes we have probably the best recruitment department around and get the best bang for our buck. Thatās great.
5; Nobody is asking for any jeopardising or Billy Big Bollock activity. Just simply make sure money is there so we can continue to win things which leads to us making more money to replace what weāve spent. This isnāt the type of sport where you can halt investment for a bit and hope you can keep up. Its an expensive sport. If we stop winning the revenues slow down and thatās damaging to the club in another way.
Hi, it is getting bloody hot here and making hosting the Olympics even less ill advised. Covid cases have tripled in the past few weeks with the Delta variant allowed in and vaccines been administered at a glacial speed.
@PaulRoJo. As someone else mentioned I got most of the figures from Sportrac. The loaned out players I basically searched how much they were loaned out for and worked out how much they will be on roughly if they were to return.
I also think Davies and Philips look too high and found some other sites quoting 4,900 pounds a week for Philips, but couldnāt be sure if he had received a bump up in wages after his impressive season. Anyway, the point I was trying to make was we will probably not be rushing out to sign up players before we get rid of a few with 48 players in total in preseason training.
Did the math. Since Klopp joined net spend over the last 7 seasons is the following:
Source: Tranfermarkt
2015-16 Net -35.95m Euros
2016-17 Net +05.48m Euros
2017-18 Net +10.62m Euros
2018-19 Net -140.88m Euros
2019-20 Net +31.20m Euros
2020-21 Net -39.45m Euros
2021-22 Net -40.00m Euros
Average not including this season (2021-22) equals -28.16M Euros. -29.85M Euros average over 7 seasons including Konate this year without any income from outgoings (Wijnaldum -free-, Kabak -end of loan-).
For 20M Euros, it will definitely be worth a punt if reports are true. Iām not sure Aouar will replace Wijnaldumās role but if Klopp and the recruitment team think heāll be a fit I wonāt be complaining. It seems we have been linked with and endless stream of MFs: Pellegrini, Sander Berg, Neuhaus, Otavio, Sanchez, Niguez, Tielsmann, Camavinga in recent weeks so the journalists are probably just hoping they get one of them right.
Things have gone very quiet on Pellegrini, which I was excited about around a month ago.
Hope you, your family and friends make it through safely.
Whatās interesting is how many people go weak at the knees because another team might muscle in on one of our rumoured targets. The kicker here is rumoured. Not really any definitive facts. So Saul could be lured by Barca or Man U. The poor bastard couldnāt get in the Athletic team, so Iām sure heāll jump at any offer. Rumours and Agents talk. All bullshit.
I know this is off-thread but I am glad Iām stuck here in this rural backwater (Fukui) rather than being in the Kanto area. If I were you Iād set the air-con to frosty and stay inside for the next four weeks.
Anyway, getting back on to transfer talk, isnāt Pellegrini a bit past it?
Without trying to take the fun out of the jokeā¦ I remember some years back when we, as fans, wished the top players would want to join us just because we were once a top club. It was basically the same thing as wanting our targets to play for āfreeā.
That said. fck barca. they created their mess

Significant uncertainty over Jordan Hendersonās Liverpool future. Talks to renew contract (2023) began weeks ago & no real progress. Neither side want a Wijnaldum repeat so it may open the door to 31yo leaving
Began weeks ago and still no progress during the Euros and summer break?!!

That hot
Heās clearly struggling for content this week is Ornstein. Ofcourse, that tweet has garnered loads of the FSG haters, who claim āHendo will be driven out like Gini wasā and āIf Hendo is forced out we riotā
Plebs.

Plebs.
The same plebs who have spent the last few years calling Hendo shite and demanding we cast him aside for the latest shiny continental toy?
There is no chance of Henderson doing a Gini, the captain loves the club so much he would play for free , unless thatās what they are asking him to do.

Even in my foggy brain at 3am I saw that tweet and first thought was ātalks started a week ago and he has two years left? Try harder Ornsteinā.
Very odd of him to try and push that as a narrative.
