I think the fact we’ve not been able to shift him before now despite decent loans and a not exactly astronomical fee being asked (look at what we got for Ibe five years ago and he hadn’t shown nearly as much as Wilson) tells you why he didn’t make it here. He just wasn’t good enough.
Been linked with top of Championship and bottom of Prem type clubs is another sign of his level. He might go on to develop and be better than he is now but he won’t be a top six type player.
Klopp knows that and that’s why he’s not been involved and is now off.
He’s young enough that he does well at Fulham, they either go up or he gets sold to a premier league team.
For me he’s always been a highlights reel player, scores some stunning goals but if you watch him over 90mins he drifts in and out of games… you compare that to Trent, Jones, Elliot for example you never see that… they are constantly in and around play. That For me is the difference and why they will make it here v’s Wilson who hasn’t.
I see it as Wilson was kept hanging around as he could serve as backup (was still young could fill U23 or go on loans offer some cover if needed). He’s been on enough loans to be reasonably assesed). I think there are questions over why he had so few opportunities with the 1st team however it’s not an essential point.
The reason he’s going now and not before I would guess is surely because we have Elliot coming through and his age.
I couldn’t tell you if Wilson is good enough or not however he’s a welsh international and has had some decent loans. It’s just that the time is now right to move on at 24 leaving the space open to Elliot and hence a chance for a ‘new’ younger player (we could see Elliot break into the 1st team or follow a course like Wilson’s time will tell).
The only querie is the low looking fee however that could just be a reflection of the times and timing of when Wilson’s time was up.
A bit worried about the lack of news/rumors regarding Shaqiri. He had a great Euro and I thought he would be one of the first to find a new destination.
I can imagine there’s a few clubs waiting until the end of the deadline to try to snap him up cheap. Personally, I don’t mind if he stays. Origi’s more of a concern.
Some players aren’t good enough for the top level. Can hardly blame the manager for that. I watched Wilson a few times at Derby when people got excited about a couple of goals, but it was clear to me that he was never going to make it at Liverpool. He didn’t stand out. In the same games Mason Mount was a different gravy and clearly destined for the top
As note, he doesn’t usually start for Wales… definitely has proved he can get a few goals, but hasn’t proved he has the all around game to start at the highest levels.
Seems a good deal all around, although I’m a little surprised he isn’t going to a lower prem side.
Wilson has started for Wales, but especially against better opposition where they want to counter atack more, Dan James tends to be favoured. The approach makes sense, but ultimately it still speaks to the level Wilson is at (or isnt) because Wales simply doesnt have the talent to leave a top talent on the bench. A player who was good enough for this level, Wales would find a way to get him on the pitch and build their game plan around that.
We’ve had so many youngsters who all the forumites were begging that they be given game time, then after years of not being able to break into the starting team, are sold and were either poor or unable to break into their new club’s starting lineup.
I’m erring on the side of us armchair experts being wrong on Wilson rather than Klopp. It wouldn’t be the first time and won’t be the last.
I’d imagine work rate is the main issue with Wilson,Klopp wouldn’t need to play him in our first team to know he’s not good enough to play in our system,he just has to look at how he played on loan for Derby and Cardiff at a lower level.
As good as Wilson is (he’s a tidy little player),scoring free kicks and long shots,it isn’t good enough for our style of play, drifting in and out of games has cost him a place at LFC,Grujic was exactly the same when i watched him at Cardiff, one game he was on it,the next 3-4 he went missing.
I wouldn’t be suprised if we get a Bowen type of player, under the radar, somebody we wouldn’t really class as top level.
I think he’d do well for us,he’s hard working and tenacious, plus the english/homegrown quota needs to be upped within our squad, the last time we signed an ex-Hull player with a similar hard working attitude it didn’t work out too bad for us,i guess the only real issue would be the transfer fee, unless we could do a deal with one of our bench warmers we are looking to offload.
