If we do spend 86mil, and we have shown before we are willing to spend big when necessary, it has to be a player that we absolutely must have. And however good Chiesa might be, he is not an absolutely must have for us, whether as a player or in the position he plays in.
Someone’s trying hard with this Chiesa rumour. Apparently Edwards has cleared the space by moving Wilson on. Err okay…
Chiesas a great talent. Hadn’t realised he was 23. He’s only just moved to Juventus last season. Was important in the Euros, and is yet to win a Serie A title. Hes going nowhere.
Next bullshit rumour please.
Taking this thread in a different direction…
I ask this genuinely, does anyone think it possible we don’t bring in any players this window?
We’ve touched on it in various threads. Not for financial reasons, but the senior team still has too many bodies.
I’ll put a tenner on it today the club doesn’t make one senior team signing before the window closes. It has to be a senior player. Not some 15/16 year old “wunderkind” from another club that was bought for £500k.
EDIT: and yes, that Chiesa report was the biggest piece of horseshit I’ve read in a long time. Zero point zero truth to that.
His position will be a must have in the next few years though. Am sure our team are forward planning for the (sad) day when one of Mane, Mo or Bobby moves on
Very much possible.
Yes there are lingering question marks over Firmino (form) and Naby & AOC (fitness). But the way we operate, I can’t see us buying another senior player because someone already in the squad might not switch on.
Completely agree. And that’s where I’m coming from with that question. The numbers still say we have plenty of bodies, and Klopp’s undying loyalty to his players.
I’m not at all surprised when the window closes this is the squad we go with it.
I think Klopp and Edwards had set the priorities of this window
- Buy a CB
- Clear all/as much fringe/surplus players
- Sort the contracts of the key players
I agree on the squad size. There are four possible pieces of business in my eyes but I definitely don’t see all 4 happening.
1: Most likely a CM comes in, but I only see this if Ox is moved exclusively to attack or sold, Jones moved to attack or loaned and/or Keita sold. I can’t see a new CM added to Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago, Milner, Jones, Keita and Ox. About 2 too many if someone arrives.
2: Next most likely an attacker, if at least one of Shaqiri or Origi go possibly both with Minamino either going back on loan or sold too.
3: Another new CB but all but one of Phillips, Matip, Williams and Davies would need to go between sales and loans.
4: A right back if Neco Williams goes on loan or is sold.
The other thing is that Juve havent technically purchased him yet so I dont understand how a deal would be reached for him. The deal that took him from Sampdoria was reported to be a two year loan deal (with hefty loan fees) and a commitment to finalize the purchase kicking in next summer. I have no idea what the legal situation would be with trying to make a deal now. Who would we negotiate with, Sampdoria or Juve? Would both parties have to agree?
I mean, we already have signed a senior player (Konate).
As to whether we’ll sign another, I think we will. But I also think the finances are clearly delicately poised, hence the need to shift players on before we can bring anyone else in.
Squad has enough in quality and quantity. We could still sell Nat, Shaq and Div, have some injuries during the season and still have a successful season.
Personally I believe there will be another new signing but I am not sure what kind of midfielder or what kind of attacker Klopp wants to bring in.
Squad seems very ‘complete’ so I’m wondering what type of player could improve us.
Correct. That’s why I specified squad as is with no new signings.
EDIT: I mean, that’s why I said I was asking genuinely.
Absolutely, so we would identify replacements but it would more likely to be within the squad or someone who can be bought at a good value (someone like Jota-ish) to be developed in a season or two to replace eventually our current front 3 but not a 86mil player right now…but you are right in the sense if we do not identify those in time, in 2 or 3 seasons, we might be force to spend that kind of money.
Do we have any position currently needing a must have option ?
Maybe CM but i think departures would be required otherwise we have enough bodies on paper
This is purely my own opinion but if you see the 2 big investments Klopp and club has made, it was because there is an absolutely must for someone who can come in immediately to make an impact. VVD was needed simply we had been lacking a real leader in CB. We had good players there for years but never a leader and when Klopp really wanted VVD and realized we had to pay that sum, we paid and we were proven right. For Alisson, Klopp had wanted to fill that position with Karius, but as soon as he realized it was not working, he triggered the move for Alisson. So to me, Klopp and the team had put in place already a solid foundation, if unless any player agitates for a move, our first 11 are in place for at least another 2-3 years. So we would not really have an absolute need to splash that kind of money for ONE player. We should instead be looking at players who are already good at a good value as a succession plan and I believe that is what Klopp is wanting to put as a system in place together with the club. We certainly do not want to be Man City, Chelsea or Man Utd, to splash 50m, 70m, 80m, everytime they identify a need instead of looking ahead and developing players.
EDIT: regarding CM, I also feel we should be looking at bringing someone in. I am sure the club is looking at options and probably be looking at the kind of 20-40m kind of option again. But knowing Klopp, if the player he wants is not available at the value the club wants, he will wait and move on with the options we have which like you said, have the numbers on paper.
It is possible. Not necessarily financial and not even just about bodies but simply if Klopp and the club cannot get the player at the value they want.
Said that weeks ago after the Kanoté signing, don’t know why just a gut feeling.
I think we will buy something potentially in the middle perhaps or in that attacking role.
I think there is no rush as they will likely be able to be bedded in over time and as said we have options.
Could easily see it.
Once we were able/forced to stop playing centre mids at centre half last season the team won 8/10 and twatted second place United at OT.
That’s with Philips, Williams and Kabak playing. With Henderson out. With Jota missing most of it.
Stands to reason that they might think they’re in a good way to go again with the squad that ran away with the league plus Thiago, Jota, Konate and Elliot but without Lovren and Gini.
Having said that I suspect we’ll bring in another senior player.
Think we’ll sign 2 more first teamers, a centre mid and forward.
Don’t think we’re over worried about them being late in the window as the team we have will be a settled starting 11 and the early fixtures aren’t bad.
