I’d sell him, if we can get somewhere near the fee we paid. We should’ve tried to get Son from Spurs, before he signed a new contract.
Liverpool ‘hold talks’ over Isamila Sarr deal
With the 4 CB’s we have available every corner we will get will be a goalscoring opportunity again instead of a waste of time as last season. A goal from a corner also means it takes some pressure off our forwards, if only we could find an easy-scoring midfielder …
Wasn’t there a couple of games we switched to a 3 late in his first or second season with us because of injuries? (I think one may have been against Stoke?) But yes, he isn’t going to move away from a 4 as far as I can see.
There was one game early on where he played Can and Gini either side of Lovren. However, it was nothing like a back three in the usual way it’s played.
Gini played a lot of minutes in midfield for us, and was a consistent performer, week in week out.
Just wanted to comment on that, as I think the cb move we have made will help, and we have the players already here to cover it.
It’s easy to look up, but I am lazy! So go with the concept… Fabinho played a lot of minutes in central defence last season. Henderson played some too. Now let’s imagine they aren’t needed in central defence any more. Those minutes can be applied to midfield. Thiago also missed a lot at the start, injury, covid too I think. And now let’s factor in Jones as a growing player who will assume more responsibility as he continues his rise.
All I’m saying is that with the players already here, Gini’s midfield minutes could easily be covered, even accounting for Ox and Keita being unreliable in terms of fitness.
Now, I do think we should add someone, and I believe we will, but just wanted to comment on how Gini’s minutes would be covered.
I too would like to see another midfielder and I really think its the last piece of the puzzle. But I can also see with our current list how we are still quite comfortable with our depth.
The question doesn’t need to be ‘Who replaces Gini?’ but ‘Were the guys behind Gini last season close to displacing him in the starting lineup?’ Klopp and his coaches will know that. We won’t.
Think it’s possible. It went unnoticed but Wijnaldum was dropped for a couple of important games towards the end of the season, it just happened to be that one of those games was cancelled.
Maybe Milner at a stretch dont know if any of the players behind Gini offer the same capacity Milner is a great all rounder he’d be the closest but he doesnt have the legs to play the minutes Gini did anymore.
Naby and Ox are different options all together for mine and It’s too soon for Jones to be relied upon for big minutes.
One of Ox or Naby may end up moving and that frees up the wages to bring in Saul or another.
The simple equation is we look at the 19/20 season. We didn’t have the CMs being asked to play centre back and we didn’t have a major injury crisis in that area. Gini still played 3,644 minutes that season. Henderson did 3,000+, Fabinho just under that, Milner at 1,700 ish and even Ox and Keita got 2,100 and 1,400 respectively.
We then let Lallana go, bring Jones more into the fold, Buy Thiago and let Gini go.
The question then is, do we expect Thiago to provide 3,000+ minutes this season or are we hoping to give more to Jones? Because even with a less injury-hit season than last season, Gini was still the mainstay of that midfield. 3,600 minutes is 40 games, not an easy figure to cover if two of your options are very injury prone, one is a bit injury prone, one is 36 and another is still relatively young and inexperienced.
The number of bodies adds up to looking fine but the number of minutes Gini played isn’t that easily redistributed around what is a bit of an unreliable group.
How many minutes have our front 3 played , the usage rates of our players are more than any other in the league, we have basically run them into the ground with the amount of playing time we are putting them through.
I suspect this is a bit of a myth. They play more because they want to and have the physical ability to do so.
So if I have this right Gini was just about minutes and we now have Thiago, Jones and Millie to cover those minutes, yes?
I like Sarr and, I guess, he might be available for considerably less than Watford were demanding a year ago…but I don’t see the need for him since we got Jota, unless it’s about succession planning for Mané or Salah and then…does he have that high a ceiling? Don’t know.
Well obviously ability comes into play but the ability to be on the pitch is also a pretty important consideration. And we had Milner, Jones, and Lallana to cover previously and still Gini played a phenomenal number of games.
If you think Thiago can do that number of games and we can hand any other minutes to a kid and a guy who’ll be 36 in January on top of what they’ve already been playing then cool. History tells us that would be a bold position to take but that’s fine.
Worth a punt i guess,Jota can play wing, attacking midfield,or upfront mainly on the left in Mane’s position or in the center,Sarr is a left footer who normally plays on the right in Salah’s position. If we did sell Origi,i think he could take his place, although the minor issue of African Cup could come into play, where our back up to Salah leaves for a few weeks aswell.
Yes however that was the managers decission. I think Klopp is capable of dealing with this new situation. If he starts crying in the middle of the season I’ll just question Klopp’s adaptability.
As it stands I can not see the problem, we have the numbers and we have the quality, whether that quality comes from a ‘kid’ or an OAP. I will also repeat Thiago looked good after he got over an inflicted injury (in fact he got better and better imo).
We’ll see but I’m not going to fret about it until the situation looks dire, at the moment it looks good so good that I’d say it’s one in one out not just one in.
Sarr give Robbo a harder time than any other attacker I’ve seen (including Messi). Bullied him. There’s clearly raw talent there. Though he plays same position as Salah so he wouldn’t get much game time would he?
If Sarr is on the bench it would give the option to take off Salah or move Salah central and take off Bobby.
Plus he’s good enough to start cup games and league matches during a packed week.
I’d imagine he’d get plenty of minutes. But don’t know if it would be enough to keep him happy.
