No, because he wouldn’t fit in with Klopp’s way of playing. But I would have taken Suarez in a heartbeat.
Well, I’m glad I sat that one out. Would’ve been nice to see a new face join, but I’m happy enough with the squad.
@uberkoen you’re up now bud, don’t fluff your lines now
Would have liked to turn origi into Sarr or someone with similar profile, but oh well. Not all that bothered. Klopp will have to play Minamino or Origi this year or our front 4 will be ground into dust by seasons end. Maybe redress situation in January. Origi needs some easy minutes towards end of games to boost his PR. Cmon wolves, he still has it.
Be interesting to see how much game time the likes of Jones, Ox, minamino and Origi get now they are here until Jan at least.
As I said squad depth is great if you use the squad. Klopp doesn’t tend to. Even with injuries minamino was loaned out and Origi didn’t get a kick.
v 10 man Chelsea the attacking players on the bench (from the above list) were overlooked for defenders and midfielders.
Naby is a strange one as well. Biggest game of the season so far and he doesn’t get on either.
I don’t believe this bollocks about saving him for 2 international games as no club would ever do that.
Well since it’s over, it really shows you how much bullshit these so called pundit make up.
The blaggers like GrizzKhan shown up once again to be utter bullshit merchants.
I think he already explained pretty well why he didn’t “use the squad” last season. Didn’t see a problem there the season before last when we won the title, and also utterly dismantled Everton using some of the very players people were so eager to sell.
That’s was in 19 when we were flying. Just odd he didn’t use squad last season and so far hasnt again.
If you read this article, he goes on to talk about how he wanted stability in the squad first and foremost. Would you have had Origi start multiple games in a row instead of Mané? I don’t think Origi is as bad as most people make him out to be, but I’m not that deluded to think that Mané isn’t miles ahead of him. In contrast, when we had a stable team in 2019-20, Origi did start the occasional game. After the Everton game in fact, Jürgen made the point that Martinez should be starting Origi for Belgium more often, and that Origi was underappreciated. Jürgen doesn’t speak ill of his players, that is true, but he doesn’t often give praise where it’s unwarranted.
Even if Origi is a bad example, the main focus of the article was Keïta, who we know can play pretty well when not injured. Yet, even a player of his calibre wasn’t risked as much. That’s why I’m so insistent that last season should not be the barometer of any player, except perhaps in a good light like Phillips and Williams.
EDIT: Just caught the part of “and so far hasnt again”. I think we’ve used all our midfielders barring Jones so far? We haven’t changed the defence up that much, but again I think it’s about stability. Our forward line, would anyone really mess with that?
Doesn’t it become Klopp’s fault then? It’s not one or two players, but many players which apparently haven’t been used enough. Or are those signings all which Klopp didn’t want in the first place?
Good question.
Klopp is clearly a very loyal manager and stands by his players but when does this become a negative? How long do you give Player A time to “play himself back into form” to the detriment of Player B not being given any chances at all and his career stagnating?
Yep. On one hand you have so much squad depth. And on the other, many are either injury prone or not ‘trusted’ by Klopp. So, either our recruitment which is praised so much sucks that Klopp has to rely on just the limited options he has. In which case, some amount of blame lies on Klopp, because he would have had atleast some say in getting those players in the first place. Or the alternative is FSG do not involve Klopp in recruitment process at all. Which is hard to believe.
Or maybe we have the right players, but for some issues they are not trusted by Klopp to perform no matter what the situation is. Whether we need goals or want to see out the match or all our strikers are injured or out of form. Then maybe questions need to be asked to Klopp on why have these players still here? And which are the signings he needs that he’ll actually use? Is there so much disconnect between Klopp and owners that Klopp asks for a, b and c player in order of priority, but the owners always sign player ‘d’? Why is Klopp still here then if there is so much disconnect. Also, how is Klopp different than Pep, since he has himself said he believes in training and coaching players? We can’t have it both ways. Maybe this scenario isn’t true then?
Maybe the answer lies in all of them functioning in sync and know what they are doing. Maybe there is no fall out between Klopp and the owners and Klopp realize what he is working with. Maybe there are no right players that fit not only what Klopp wants from playing style, but from ethos as well. The point being all are in it together and the constant tirade towards either the players not being good enough and just wanting to get rid of them all or us not spending enough isn’t right to be directed without Klopp not being accountable at all.
Klopp has shown he can be decisive and ruthless when he needs to coming to dropping players. He dropped Karius less than a season and went out there to buy Alisson when it is clear its not working. He dropped Moreno and replaced him with a 8mil player who was playing for Hull. So he is not blindly loyal. He manages the squad and gives players as much as a chance as he thinks it is worth it to. If he thinks Origi or Keita or Ox is worth their salt in the squad, it means Klopp really think so. I rather such a manager and a club that manages their resources rather than letting players in and out like a revolving door.
Think you’re in danger of oversimplifying it. Maybe they have arrived and not good enough at this level. Yer Tomkins fella said only 50% of transfers are successful. We’re well above that in recent years. There’s been far more examples of Klopp making successes of new players.
He’s watching them every day, alongside an army of coaches/assistants analysing every minutiae. If they aren’t getting picked it’s because he thinks others will do a better job on the day.
I’d have liked a new forward instead of Origi, and a midfielder like Bissouma would have improved the balance and quality of our midfield.
But the squad is still very good and very deep in most areas. The bedwetting every window is absolutely tiresome and embarrassing from grown men. You’d think the 19/20 summer window and following season would make these types a little more reticent to spit the dummy out but it hasn’t even a little bit.
The obsession with transfers is so boring. I’m looking forward to the football starting again.
Doesn’t help that we have the international break.
I might be wrong, but I think that was the point @Colossal_centre_back was trying to make. It’s not that players are getting overlooked, or that we’re not using the squad. It’s that it so happens that given all the constraints we have over the course of a season, the manager picks the team which he thinks is most likely to win. When we have momentum and stability, there’s the freedom to shake it up a little and rotate. When there’s no momentum and stability, the most important thing is to retain the core and not change it up too much.
There are therefore no passengers in the squad as such, and that is the result of deliberate work done not just by the manager himself, but every member of the team involved on the sporting side. Our squad is deeper than many people think it is, and that was by design, and by putting in the hard work to go along with the expertise, to make sure that we are more successful at transfers, that will not work with a scattergun approach.
The conclusion can therefore only be that there is a plan, and all our actions should be seen to be following that plan, and that philosophy which the manager has set out that FSG are fully invested in. I think Jürgen is a sufficiently stubborn and idealistic man to not be a part of this project if the latter wasn’t the case. That we are not making transfers is therefore not a sign that FSG are skint, but that the driving force behind our team does not think it prudent.
The club told Origi’s representatives that he could leave so not sure that’s a ringing endorsement on whether Klopp thinks he’s “worth his salt in the squad”.
Despite not being injured he didn’t even make the matchday squad on 12 occasions in the league last year. Made the bench as an unused substitute in a further 17, came off the bench 7 times (6 of which were for 6 minutes or less), and started twice - not once completing 90 minutes. Of his two starts, one was when Jota was injured and Salah and Firmino were both being rested on the bench (not for long as he was yanked off after 57 minutes against Burnley at home) and the other was when both Jota and Mane were injured. He completed 181 minutes in the league last year.
He was outscored by Alisson.
For me, if we had any incoming transfers, I would have liked it to have been the forward equivalent of Elliott, someone whose current level is at least on par with Origi (or what people would think I think of him), but whose potential is really high, and is really young.
I’m less worried about midfield, as we seem to have a bit more time in that regard to be hunting in the next couple of transfer windows. For me, if we have any weaknesses in that regard, it’s a future replacement for Fabinho. I am probably reading too much into it, but that we didn’t include an option to buy for Clarkson’s loan deal may be a suggestion that we see him as having at least the potential to play a few more games for us. Otherwise, we have a couple of players spaced around 3 years apart, from Henderson and Thiago to Oxlade-Chamberlain to Keïta to Jones and Elliott. There’s also the ageless Milner, but I think this may be the season we see him playing much less than before.
