Regarding Jones, the rumours started only after there was an alleged bust up with Slot and his playing time was drastically reduced. He may want to stay under a new manager, in which case he should be offered a new contract.
This is a more general point. There’s going to be a lot of turnover and we shouldn’t be rushing to break up the squad and start from scratch. Slot has managed to make almost everyone look significantly worse. We need to fill specific needs, hopefully with the input of a new manager, not add to them without cause.
Yes and no. Kelleher hit the point where he wanted to play more and we had a replacement lined up. He was never going to usurp Ali for the number 1 shirt and so timing wise he moved on about the right point for all involved.
Morton was 22/23 and had failed to breakthrough. We could have held onto him but we’ve similar and younger players in Nyoni and McConnell so you could argue we were okay with keeping the ones we felt were the better long term prospects.
Nunez and Diaz aren’t at all the types of player I’m talking about. They cost us over £100m and neither were developed by the club. Also Nunez was a bust and showed he wasn’t the level we needed.
Quansah I agree with you on. Thought it mad we sold him to buy Leoni. Elliott has never really found a position and £40m was potentially going to be a good chunk to reinvest. In hindsight it’s easy to say we should have kept him but I don’t know where and when he’d have played for us. We do of course get another shot with him potentially.
Nyoni and Rio aside I don’t really know who we’ve got coming through next. Danns injury trouble looks like it’ll limit him. Koumas has done okay but not spectacular in the Championship. Maybe Jaros as a backup keeper.
Kieran Morrison is next youth player up. Aside from him I’d like us to keep Luke Chambers, currently on loan at Charlton, and Luca Stephenson, on loan at Dundee United, around to give them at least a shot at training with the first team and see what happens. I’m also not giving up on Bajcetic.
I think there is a tendancy to give up on players a little bit too early at big clubs.
Yes. But I think if we can’t get more from the academy or some cheap assets, it’s a huge problem for building the squad. In Klopp’s early era we got lucky with Robertson, Trent, Milly. Origi and Shaqiri also contributed significantly.
If we have to buy a full starting lineup at premium prices, then I think it will be very, very costly.
Football Insider with the hot scoop again. They must have somebody on the inside!
England midfielder Curtis Jones, 25, is unhappy playing a fringe role at Liverpool and could leave in the summer. (Football Insider)
Also, why are Bayern Munich interested in Anthony Gordon when they’ve already got Diaz? The Times is saying NUFC will sell him to Bayern if the BM pay 75 million. It’s not exactly an unreliable source.
