The Unreliable Transfer Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 4)

We’ve signed one Dutch player since Slot has been here but three from the Bundesliga.

Surely if you’re manifesting things to preemptively moan about it should be all that shopping in what I assume is your homeland?

Yeah but what about all those rumours from the football insider.

We did try to sign another in January on loan - but your point stands!

 c’mon, Bart Verbruggen would make a half decent backup no.2 to the Big Mama. 9 clean sheets out of 34 so far this season.

In all seriousness though, genuine question - if the intention all along from the club was to invoke that one year extension in the strategy of receiving a return from his sale this summer?

Then how much value would that likely bring back in to a transfer fee and the wage differences saved to 2nd choice, 3rd choice keeper?

I don’t want this to happen, just asking for a friend, it’s not Bart haha

On loan at Ajax. He was their first choice but got injured and is out for the rest of the season.

Thanks for the info.

Hope you are keeping safe and that things come to a conclusion and you can come home soon.

Joyce said we looked at Porto’s Diogo Costa and Lille’s Lucas Chevalier before we signed Mama. Maybe we’ll look at them again. Chevalier went to PSG but lost his place in the team. I’d be fine bringing Kelleher back if he wanted to. Can’t remember who it was but we’ve also been linked with Robin Roefs at Sunderland. He a Dutch boy.

I’d prefer him to go to United than to us

I think Mama is an excellent shot stopper. His feet are nowhere near as reliable, but Alisson has also been noticeably worse at distribution as well. There was a time period where the backline kept inexplicably passing to Mama’s right foot, which I’m sure didn’t help.

I’m not sure how many “total package” keepers there are out there - certainly very few, if any, who are anywhere near Alisson’s level at his peak. I’d rather have a supremely good shot stopper - and I don’t think Mama is far away - than a bad shot stopper who is better at his footwork.

What was the old Ruud Gullit quote?

“A goalkeeper is a goalkeeper because he can’t play football”

Agree there are not many. The likes of David Raya have jobs at top clubs because of their perceived ability as footballers not shot stoppers.

Even Guardiola decided to quit the “total football goalkeeper” idea and just get the best shot stopper he can.

I’m not sure Ali was ever brilliant on the ball in the boring pass it around the back sense. Maybe why his distribution has been worse under Slot. He used to fire great direct long balls to Mo and Mane though. Would love to go back to that way of playing

Yeah. We’ve all heard the reason for why Slot prefers we focus on short passes, but when the opposition stops responding to it the way he wants there’s a tactical stalemate of us not trying to create anything and them not giving us opportunities to play through them. We haven’t shown much of a sense of how to solve that problem in pretty much a full year now. It was notable that in one of our better performances in a while, that itself was still not great, a lot of the better passages of play included big switches of play that put the ball in open space reminiscent of what Robbo or Trent spent years hitting. The complete opposite of Slotball.

For me it’s about variety. All teams need a base way of playing but the more predictable and uniform your play is the easier it is to game plan against it. When you have better players you can win games not just because they are often going to be good enough to just have their individual quality break a stalemate, but because you are capable of doing more different things when your players are good. The irony of this bland predictable football this year is smart adaptation to the situation was the cornerstone of our success last season. We saw it as early as the first game against Ipswich where we turned the tide of the game, and quickly, by Slot instructing us in the second half to start going longer quicker.
