The Unreliable Transfer Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 4)

Yes him and Rogers from Villa.

Is ā€œbeing assessedā€ short hand for we’ve bolloxed this up and now Leipzig want too much money?

It means the volume of post from @RedOverTheWater about him have impacted the algorithm

Supposed to be a reliable journalist but if not thought I’d post it anyway

I think the Wharton vs Anderson conversation is a fascinating one in general, but also gives a really interesting insight into the direction we feel we need to go in.

I love Wharton. That perennially available and always uses it intelligently even if not extravagantly way of playing is my favourite sort of player to watch. There are many players who try to approximate it by getting a lot of touches and make a lot of passes, but the difference between those and someone who does it well, the situations in which he can comfortably get on the ball and retain possession, is really evident. My main worry with him as a priority for us is if he is a player who needs a manager with a specific vision for his football to be able to use him effectively and needs to put the put the right players around him.

Regardless, it is an interesting response to those who have argued all year that our problem is we didnt see how much more physical the league was going to get this year and need another window to bring in those more robust players to address that deficit.

Be surprised if, as a marca journo, he has good links between english clubs.

That said he has also linked us in the article with Diomande, Doue, and Senesi

I dont know much about this lad but why the fuck would you want to leave Bournemouth for Spurs (if they stay up) - can only be money or he is Spurs standard, Shit.

Tbf Iraola is going and there may be another player exodus as with last season. No guarantee bournemouth next season is remotely similar to this season, especially given how much is owed to iraola for how well he handled the player turnover. Spurs and bournemouth are both big gambles for next season.

As for his level; id be happy to have him here as a backup. Can play across the entire backline and would alleviate the load on the kids (jacquet/leoni) while allowing us to rest the others when needed. At 28 hed very much be a short term signing for immediate impact. A worthwhile punt in my eyes

Be surprised if a Marca journalist was reliable.

Heh, in ideal world, you’d want both in your team - one a proper midfield dominator, winning duels left and right and offering a reliable shield for defence and a platform for midfield to build attacks; the other a silky, press-resistant conductor with excellent vision and passing ability. Imagine those two behind Wirtz, eh…

Even given the choice, I genuinely wouldn’t know which one to pick as I feel our midfield lacks both. That said, you’re absolutely right - we’d need the right players around either and a coach who would know what to do with that team.

The process of reshaping the squad will continue – nobody can be certain whether Alisson Becker, a target for Juventus, will remain – and Yan Diomande, the RB Leipzig winger with the €100m valuation, remains a target. With other areas of the squad that will need to be bolstered, Liverpool could even use Harvey Elliott as a makeweight in the deal, as Leipzig have been long-term admirers and the former England Under-21 international knows he must reignite his career by playing regularly.

My apologies if this has been posted before - I genuinely haven’t seen mentions of it - but Dominic King is reiterating that Liverpool are genuinely interested in Diomande, with the article I’ve just linked being the second where he wrote about in the last five days, I think. I don’t think I’ve seen a more credible source reporting it.

I think from all the consistent links over the last year or so it does look like Diomande and Wharton are the primary targets for this window, and we’ll spend big to land them.

There may be another being worked we havent heard about yet like we had with the Wirtz deal last year, but i suspect anything else may depend on outgoings and relatively opportunistic deals.

Wharton will partially fill TAA’s role before he left. We absolutely need his long-passing skills.

If we secure CL football, we’re in with a chance. I’d really like Jones to extend, though, and Morrison to get a chance to stake his claim to be here in the long term, even as the sixth midfielder (sorry, I can’t escape the feeling his future will be in midfield, rather than on the wing).

Provided the club get the calibre of Wharton and Diomande for the starting XI, I’d expect them to also sign a left back and another winger, given that Robbo and Chiesa are on their way out. Ngumoha to get more minutes, Nyoni to go out on loan, Mac Allister to be sold if Jones extends?

I wonder if there is a need for an additional winger?

Obviously depends on how team are used and who moves on but with an expected core midfield of Szob, Grav and Wharton plus Wirtz and Dionande, and with Gakpo, Rio, Frimpong in reserve, i’m not sure there are a lot of minutes for them unless they play multiple roles?

If you suggest that Slot use Wirtz on the flank in certain games, my next ten posts will be various GIFs of Eeyore - or maybe it will be one and the same GIF of Eeyore posted ten times!

With Ekitike out (at this point, I’m willing to write him off for the next season as long as he fully overcomes his injury and has a long and successful Liverpool career) and taking into account the injury issues that Frimpong and Bradley have suffered, I really hope there’s another right-sided player added because I don’t see anyone from academy stepping up in the foreseeable future (Abe is injured, too young, and could be on his way to Man City anyway).
