The Unreliable Transfer Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 4)

If we buy Gordon and Barcola/Diomande, then we can sell Gakpo.

I wouldn’t. I’d keep Gakpo for one more season as the fourth wide forward (behind two new signings and Rio) and as a backup striker. We shouldn’t count on having Ekitike at all next season, and Isak hasn’t proven he can stay fit.

I also doubt we sign a big-name central striker, since we’ll eventually have Ekitike back competing to start. So even if we bring in one wide forward who can also play centrally in a pinch (Bowen, Gordon, Barcola), we could still use another body, and Gakpo would be more effective in that role than Chiesa.

I’m all good with selling Gakpo, but only if we bring in three attackers. Two isn’t enough.

That almost surely won’t happen.

For a few weeks now, there have been reports here that Bayern is already working on a deal with Newcastle for Anthony Gordon. It appears to be proving more difficult for Bayern than expected; they are now even attempting to include NĂźbel in the transfer. So, I do believe this is a serious pursuit, but there is still no agreement regarding the transfer fee.

And we know just how difficult it is dealing with Newcastle—they’ll probably spend ages just looking for a replacement first.

Them not being in Europe at all might make important sales “easier” than it was at times in the past, they probably have to generate some money and then go into the market for their needs.

I’m not a big fan of Gordon. He raises his game against us, but overall the numbers are not up to much, at least in relation to the fee they seem to want.

He goes in for a lot of histrionics too, and we’ve seen for a long time that we get short shrift from referees, so Gordon’s antics won’t help much. Not that I’d want him to play like that anyway.

There’s also a sense in which teams sit in a low block against us, and Gordon’s game seems to be galloping into space behind the defenders, which he won’t have a lot of here.

On the plus side I like that he is home grown and knows the Premier League. I also like the versatility, as he can play through the middle if needed (Isak’s injuries and Ekitike being out mean that will be a useful option).

Like others I don’t expect a big name central striker given who we already have on the books, but it could be a versatile wide man, or a proven low cost option through the middle e.g. Ivan Toney on a loan was mentioned.

If I squint a bit I could just about see the sense in signing Gordon as a second winger, say in addition to Diomande. I would be frustrated if Gordon was the only signing for the wing.

Still, overall I think we can do better for the money, if 75M is being bandied about as the price tag.

Yeah, and they didnt come out of the Isak situation well either. You’d hope they’d have learned some lessons to make them better more reliable partners in negotiations next time

Yup, those are my concerns, I think he is a bit one trick to be honest.

Being one trick would make him unable to play 4 offensive positions. I don’t think he is one trick.

There have been stories over the last few months in particular that they have accepted the need to sell to re-invest.

Still annoyed we didn’t get Semenyo. I’m pretty sure we knew Mo was leaving from January onwards so we should have done all we could to get him. Played 78 games at CF, 75 at RW and 70 at LW. Top versatility.

Maybe he would’ve still opted for City.

Presumably Diomande and/or Barcola were our top targets and so we were holding out for them?

Makes even less sense now to sell Diaz to pay £75m for Punch from ‘Punch & Judy’

I think we need to keep Gakpo and bring in 3 attackers (one a young/cheap backup).

We lost Diaz, Jota, Nunez and now Mo. We’ve only brought in injury-prone Isak and Hugo who might miss most of next season

Every time I have watched him he falls over and gets a free kick.

That’s his trick already gone with us. I know you like him and I think he’s average we aren’t going change our minds so.

He is a one trick pony if he’s equally shit in all positions.

I don’t think Barca and Bayern would compete for an average one-trick pony at 80m.

Don’t have to worry about Gordon anymore

Barca are really good at knowing stuff and Bayern thought Wirtz was the bees knees but I know you’ve made one post about selling him. I am going off what I see and he’s an average player. Sorry can’t be more enthused than that.

Also Barca signed Rashford, who has been a good player for them but was he showing that at Villa or Man Utd? Not really.
