The Unreliable Transfer Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 4)

Sorry thought you were talking about him at PSG. He would absolutely start at Liverpool.

That works exactly against your argument. For example, the interest in 2025 was probably higher than it would be now in 2026. I think he was also one of Bayern’s options for the left side.

To be fair, Gakpo can attract interest regardless, but I’m just saying it’s far easier to say ā€œsell himā€ than actually do it at a quality price.

I would have sold him last year. It doesnt work against my argument.

He only loses value over time. It will be even harder to sell him next year or at the very least, for likely a lower fee.

We were talking about this summer though. He has 4 years left on his contract, which got improved. On the back of a below standard season. In a club that is still, regardless of a below standard season on the pitch, in the top tier of football’s food chain and still in the CL.

Wonder if it means the Rashford deal is off now. Because Barca tried to sneakily re-negotiate the €30m clause to buy him and United so far didn’t agree on lowering that.

The bluster on X is we’re angling for Dumfries and offering them Curtis.

Yeah it will be tough to get a team to pay his wages or him to accept a lower wage. But that“s what we have to do.

He“s not good enough and if we don“t get rid we have a year of his expensive wages, sub standard performances and then still have to sell him next year.

But if we get rid we’ve essentially got a 17 year old, a wing back and Chiesa as our only wide forwards options left on the books. And one of them is surely gone and we need one of the others to play RB a bit.

He’s had a poor season and he’s not a Mane level talent but this summer is not the time to sell him when we already need at least two wide forwards already and cover for Ekitike down the middle.

Essentially he’s a reasonable squad option if we get two other forwards.

That went well then…

Well of course the idea is to buy two very good wide players.

If we“re not buying any then we should keep Gakpo but if we“re not buying any we might as well give up to be honest.

And yes we“ll have to rely on some kid and Frimpong and maybe Elliott and sometimes go to 2 strikers and no wide players. We can“t fix all this mess in one window and still have a deep squad unfortunately.

And sure, stockpiling players is great but we“re not in the position to do that I imagine. We need to sell for the funds.

We don’t need to sell for funds, we need to sell to free up non-homegrown spots but we can do that without selling Gakpo.

And ultimately we’re not getting a significant fee for him this summer so there’s little point creating another problem to fix.

We buy two more wingers and keep Gakpo as an option on the left and down the middle. Hopefully there’s a new manager on the way who’ll get him and all the rest to play to something near their capabilities.

On the BbC app they say that Barca have agreed a fee for Gordon.

We probably do need to sell for funds.

We probably need 4, 5 or even 6 first team players to come in. That after coming 5th and having spent a lot of money in the last 2 windows.

this is why the isak purchase looks damning. and to a lesser extent the wirtz buy.

who are we going to sell, this squad is already undermanned. other than chiesa and endo, will will put a further hole in the squad that needs filling.

Well, we don’t know that. He had 24 or 25 goal involvements in his previous season. We know he can play better than this. Will he? Hopefully so. But we can’t say for sure, either way.

Hopefully Isak will get fit and become a new player. I hope he does. Wirtz will be a year stronger, a new winger. Leone available and back. One or two here and we are a different squad.
.
I still think our biggest problem is standing on the sidelines with only one year left on his contract. I wouldn’t be funding his fantasy picks if he is going to be replaced early next season.

Doubtful. We made a profit last year.

The Athletic also reported in an article on the club’s finances that it has around Ā£250m available through it’s credit facility, if it wanted to spend without selling.
