The Unreliable Transfer Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 4)

What happened to the eeyore profile pic - was that you?

We didn’t need to sell anyone to raise the offer for Guehi by £5m, we had the cash. If we had sold Konate, we may have even gone for someone else instead of him.

no, it was @Nikola

Was getting eeyore vibes…
I know we could have fonud the extra 5m; just making the point that we could easily have sold Konate last summer and doing so early would have allowed us to go all in on Guehi. Instead we are having to dig ourselves out of a financial hole or actually go along with the BS that we don’t need a fourth CB that isn’t called JoGo.

Yes but the key take away from last summer is that for what ever reason the club didn’t want to go all in for Guehi.

If only we already had a young talented CB, maybe one who came through our academy. That would have been a nice situation to be in as Konate entered his final 12 months.

Unfortunately, as far as I am aware, no such player ever existed.

Let’s rely on a guy coming back from an ACL and a shoulder injury.

I really do hope some of these academy lads are ready because that’s absolutely ridiculous, however I guess we will see.

We already sold one and will have to cough up 60+m to buy him back this summer.

Unlike himself this time last year and unlike those teenage CBs, he already has a (rather good) full season of senior experience under his belt and is fully healthy.

It´s all credit anyway.

Nobody is paying full fee up front.

The club didn’t pay the extra 5M because they didn’t have it. They didn’t pay it because it was above their valuation.

Paul Joyce reporting today that we “made strong contact” with Anthony Gordon’s representatives to sound out his interest.

Richard Hughes discovered that he preferred a move to Barcelona over his boyhood club, ending any potential to explore a deal ahead of a formal announcement over the coming days.

Hughes is having a nightmare. I know it’s Barcelona but a boyhood red who was apparently devastated when we didnt sign him in 2024 not wanting to come here is a tough pill to swallow.

Are we going to pretend that decision had nothing to do with Slot?

You know, I really, really don’t need to work that far down my list of ‘stuff that we might be able to blame Slot for’. For a start, Gordon has never worked with him but has been getting blasted by the Anfield crowd for being an Everton player. Coutinho made the same decision when Klopp was in charge and clearly ascending.

I hate how Gordon plays football and for that reason alone I’m delighted he didn’t want to come here. He’s basically football’s version of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Let’s try this. Coutinho was never a boyhood red and buying practically any latin player carries with it the risk that they will eventually angle for a move to either Real or Barca.
The fact that Gordon had been an Everton player didn’t change in 2024-2025. And he still wanted to come. But this summer he changes his mind.
Yes, it could be because Barca didn’t approach him in 2025. But our current state especially compared to Barca’s current state (they are starting to build a squad that can challenge the CL again) probably had a big part to play in that.

I casually follow a couple of football YTers that happen to be Magpies supporters, and they’re both absolutely flummoxed about why Barca would want Gordon lol.

Probably something like “he’s a speed merchant with no end products”?

Pretty much, also point to the fact he’s bad technically and has a questionable attitude on top of that.

Sometimes it works out well then.
