There were reports in Croatia a few weeks ago that Liverpool scouts (among others) attended Rijeka v Hajduk. Apparently a few young players were being monitored. Some are linking us with Branimir Mlacic, Hajduk’s 18-year old CB.
Indeed that was Millie
I sincerely hope this is but a smokescreen
It’s the last thing on his mind coz it’s Hughes’ job

Or we’ve already signed someone….
Literally usually nothing in these things. As you say Hughes role is that.
Makes sense to me. The calculus has shifted. He is months away from a Bosman, which would bring a large signing bonus and a large salary, for such a good defender with 6-7 peak years to come.
But if he is going to move in January, Crystal Palace will want their money too, so I see a January deal as the worst possible economic deal, even if the footballing case is clear.
We probably need two central defenders so maybe we will sign someone else in January and come back for Guehi in the summer? It will be interesting to see what happens.
We need to sign Guehi in January and not just because we need him. If we don’t, there’s every chance he’ll sign a pre contract agreement with a European club.
Guehi in the drivers seat.
Palace in the passenger seat.
Liverpool in the booster seat asking “Are we there yet?”
Or worse, Man City convince him to join in the summer. It’s been reported that they have strong interest.
Not closing the deal for Guehi earlier in the summer was a mistake. We thought we had it in hand, but since it fell through at the last minute, clearly we didn’t.
Sadly we are even more short because poor Leoni is out for the season.
Whether it is Guehi (I hope so) or someone else in January, we definitely need a central defender asap.
Is Schlotterbeck a more viable option in January then? He’s about the same age as Guehi, 3" taller, and arguably a better distributer of the ball.
We need someone to be fair.
preferably the referees ![]()
I think Schlotterbeck is sort of bleach blonde. Does that count?
Have a look who we got as officials for the Spuds game and fairness goes out of the window.
He’s German he will do ![]()
Supposedly Bayern are already sniffing around him as a replacement for Upamecano who they expect to go to Madrid, so he may want to wait until the summer to consider his options.
Just because he can? Where/when he wants to go, and the financial deal, is much more important than being able to sign an agreement early.
The time to get him without other tempting offers was last summer. That’s past. Whether we sign him now or in the summer we will be competing with pre contract agreements and other English clubs offering deals.
Regarding the recent information from the Athletic about PL clubs being unable to officially talk (there are always ways!) to Guehi in January, I wonder if that’s more concerning a potential pre-agreement for a free transfer next summer. In that case, yes, it does give foreign clubs an advantage and Guehi more options to choose from. Question remains and there’s no way to know at this moment, whether we’re still his first choice and how our season might change this. I’m quietly confident he’s the type who will still try to end up where he almost did a few months ago, but I can’t be sure.
As it stands CP might be able to offer him CL, which seems a long way off for us.
