I’ve never understood the idea that there’s only 1-2 players in each position that are good enough for LFC to sign. There are hundreds of thousands of footballers worldwide. Hundreds at elite level. Arsenal signing Tzolis for 30 odd exemplifies this, as do the signings Brentford, Brighton etc make.

Why have we spent all summer chasing someone with a €170m price tag on his head, instead of using that money to bring in 3-4 players and get them ready for the new season?

How many times do you go on about getting the ball to Wirtz then post that?

Getting the ball to Wirtz is more of the job of a CM not a DM. Or likely to be more their focus.

DM by nature is more defensively focused. Wharton for example isn´t a DM.

Rodri, busquets etc say different

Rodri I ll give you. Busquets had Xavi next to him to do run the game with the ball and do what I am talking about, as fancy as Busquets was on the turn and keepball

Name a top team that has an out and out DM, just a destroyer!

Name a top team is the real challenge nowadays, to be honest. Could count the truly top quality midfielders on one hand.

There are some DMs though, like Caicedo. Could argue Arsenal have played with them. But you´re more likely to see one in teams that play with a 10. Could argue Joao Neves is meant to be a ball winner for PSG.

I dunno about lynchpin but I’m defo on the side of we should never have sold the Tyler Morton who lit up Ligue 1 last season. Take a look at his highlight reel for Lyon and then look at our bench.

Nope as I thought, a proper destroyer doesn’t work for a team at the top as having possession and keeping it and progressing with it is more important.

The fact you claim to have spent last season screaming at your tele everytime Jones got the ball, yet now you’re saying we should have kept Tyler Morton is hilarious.

Why can a DM not keep possession? Just because they are defensively focused, it doesn´t mean they cant pass a ball 15 yards.

Having DMs worked for teams at the top absolutely, including us when we were good.

For the record, I didn´t say DM was first priority. If you check the Who Would You Buy thread I said CM before DM.

And you’re right. Few top teams use a DM sitting in front of the defence.

Not Barca
Not PSG
Not Bayern
Not Inter

As it happens, City are signing one right now. Coincidence eh.

I don’t get what is funny about that. One can pass and the other can’t. One is an excellent holding player and the other did nothing with the ball. Both have been sold and only one shouldn’t have been.

As I said, hilarious.

I saw every game Jones and Morton played in a red shirt from U18 level up, they’re not even close in terms of quality - and that is accepting that Jones is not a perfect player. There was no pathway for Morton here for a reason.

Oh right, post a chart to prove a point. Do you ever actually watch football? Tell me, who had the better season Morton or Jones and if you say Curtis then that will be hilarious.

No, never.

I saw a lot of Curtis and Tyler in the Academy but I couldn’t claim to have watched EVERY game, so obviously you know better. Curtis is older than Tyler so it’s not a side by side comparison anyway. I think Jones never made the step up from a player who flatters to deceive and always thought Morton had more potential. But we can agree to differ.

I’m very happy for Morton that he’s found a home in Lyon and is playing well but even at his current level he hasn’t been good enough to get into our team.

The decision for the club wasn’t really a choice between Jones and Morton. Jones was established first team player with nearly 200 first team appearances to his name, while Morton had a handful of first team games and a couple of very mixed loan spells in the Championship with both Blackburn and Hull.

The choice was between Morton and Nyoni (I don’t believe the McConnell stuff I think we are looking at a CM and McConnell will go to Preston when that’s done, or stay if it fails). The club have chosen Nyoni’s long term potential over Morton’s which I personally think makes sense as he is a much classier footballer with lots of development room.
