Selling Gakpo would be a huge mistake… we sold Diaz and kept Gakpo. Just to sell Gakpo 1 year later. That will make no sense.

Also bringing in an injured minteh. No sense either. He would need an extra month on top of recovery to get up to speed… We need help now

Right now it looks more likely that Wirtz will never amount to anything, though.

Faaarrrrrkk. Carragher has just called this the worst summer transfer window in Liverpool history.

I don’t gamble but I might put some money on us winning the league now! Maybe even the double!

He said if things don’t improve in the next few months, it could end up being. I mean, we threw a lot on the pile, not so much only in terms of money, but big moves.

And I’m yet to see sense, clarity and balance from all of it. We’ve seen many times in football such situations when not everyone can play at the same time.

It’s easily possible that a piece or a few pieces from those will be dropped with time.

Nope, he said it about last summer’s window:

As well as Wirtz, Liverpool also signed Alexander Isak for a Premier League record £125m, Hugo Ekitike (£79m), Milos Kerkez (£40m), Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m), Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29m) and Giovanni Leoni (£26m).

Carragher reckons that transfer window may have hurt Liverpool more than it helped them. In fact, he reckons it could go down as the worst summer of business by a Premier League club ever.

ā€œMy fear is this window of 12 months ago could set Liverpool back a year or two to fix it,ā€ he said.

That said records are made to be broken so this one could take over if the next week goes badly.

This will always be the absolute nadir of summer windows, for me.

Or 2002.

Diouf/Diao/Cheyrou? Right after the cup treble which killed the upward momentum of the team.

We objectively know that Florian and Alex are not bad players. I desperately want them to succeed because if they do, so do Liverpool. I am afraid, though, they are ill-suited to both our team tactics and philosophy, and perhaps the league.

Flo isn’t the Coutinho-style no 10. He needs his team to be on his wavelength for him to click. Runners need to read his flicks and first time passes otherwise it all looks toothless.

Someone else mentioned this before, but Isak thrived at Newcastle on open spaces to attack. That’s the single biggest thing most teams in the league will deny Liverpool. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him be effective over long stretches against low blocks. He can be a deadeye finisher as demonstrated against Westham away last season. But then the problem is that the team is not set up to provide him the opportunities with regularity.

Hugo seems much much more suited to how we have played for the past few years. He’s also got more than a bit of natural combative instincts that both Flo and Isak seem to lack.

I’m not even going to start with Frimpong and Kerkez. Big downgrades to Trent and Robbo.

So…in conclusion, given the position we were in and given the amount of money we spent and given the players we let go/lost…I hate to say it but Carra might be right.

Thanks a lot Hughes :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

Also a good (bad) choice lol.

I’d factor in Hodgson being in charge that summer as well, though.

2002 is still the winner for me because it was one of the times we spectacularly blew it (not that everything is decided in the transfer window) after coming close, when the situation was good and stable and we had to make the next (and possibly final) step.

2010 the club overall was in such a mess that such a transfer window wasn’t that surprising.

Good lord that was awful. Thanks for that!

Did we sign Meireles that window at least?

Haha, we did. I thought he was ok, best of a very bad bunch for sure.

Konchesky’s Mum is going to be very upset.

We also signed Iraola and transferred Slot to Ibiza…
If we win the PL it might be the best transfer window ever..!
Can’t stand Carragher giving his opinions on such a followed platform, when the guy has never proven himself in the field of his targeted criticism

To be fair that’s cheered me right up.

We don’t have Hodgson and I don’t think Iraola is looking for the modern Poulsen and Konchesky

We were in such a mess that I was excited over us signing a half-healthy Joe Cole. I remember calling my mum at a gass station to tell her we signed him. Cringe.

Probably tells you more about the lack of certain types of players we saw at this club around those years and decades…

I thought he was a good player, and I think he also gave us one of my favourite forum poster names, Waul Myrellies. Or something like that.

Unless that’s just a false memory I’m having. But I’m at least 80% sure that was a poster on the old forum.

I feel for Harvey - his career is going the way of every social event I’ve ever attended, no one desperate enough to show even the slightest bit of interest
