The Unreliable Transfer Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 5)

The French have always been weird.
I’m willing to put up with weird, if the talent is there.

They’ve just broken their record transfer window from the 2023/24 summer. Since then they’ve finished 5th, 17th and 17th and spent a further £385m before this summer.

They go under the radar when it comes to spend because of the reputation of Daniel Levy but they’re one of the biggest spenders in Europe in the past five years and that’s before this summer.

Their problem has been wages. A clubs wage bill is a far stronger indicator of potential success than their transfer spend and Spurs have been notoriously cheap in that area compared to other top 6 clubs and the big boys in Europe. Maybe that will change now or maybe they’re just spunking another few hundred million up the wall before sacking the manager and scraping their way out of a relegation battle.

All I know about that period is that the Swiss stuffed them 4-2 at the world cup in 1938. :joy:

Liverpool are willing to listen to offers for Dutch centre-back and club captain Virgil van Dijk this summer with the decision to renew the 34-year-old’s contract last year viewed with regret by some inside Anfield. (Teamtalk)

Probably a fake story. While they may be willing to let him go, I can’t imagine they are regretting giving him a new contract. I certainly can’t see how they view it with regret. The guy played virtually every minute and while he did make some mistakes his overall performance level was fine.

I think the bigger question is for those in charge of recruitment/staffing and their fannying around over the defence.

Yeah we can’t let Virg go when we only have 3 CBs - the experienced one can’t be relied upon at all and the other two with zero PL minutes plus just coming back from serious injury. Crazy. I think we need another CB with Virg, if we let him go then we need to sign two, including at least one who comes in ready to start.

Yup. Just sounds typical Teamtalk twaddle

It’s just another example of the nonsense that the press comes up with. Zero credibility.

Do we regret squeezing into the Champions League… because with the CB options we had it would have been Nallo and 8th or 9th place instead?

The worry is…another year older with a lot more miles on the clock as he played every minute last season then had World Cup.

Yep.

I think we have allowed ourselves to be in such a bad position here. Two very young CBs, Konate gone and only really injury prone Gomez as a senior CB to support an ageing Van Dijk who has played so much football.

That on top of needing to replace Salah and potentially Ali.

That would have been evident when deciding to offer a new contract. His performances havent declined enough to make that an issue now.

They’ve also shown little evidence of signing cover or replacement for him.

Which is crazy. Even if Virg stays and plays 30 plus games, we are underdone at CB. And thats a best case scenario and we need to accept taht Virg is getting to the twilight of his liverpool career and we need an alternative starter now.

We have four. Typically that’s enough. The fact Leoni missed all of last season with an injury is frustrating as he’s not had chance to bed in but you don’t spend the kind of money we did on him and Jacquet without the intention of them being first team players.

Another addition now, without Gomez leaving, just limits opportunities for the two lads we’ve spent £80m. We’re a team in transition. That might well take a couple of years and we’re going to have to live with some less than perfect situations.

I’ve seen nothing but a couple YouTube compilations of Jacquet but people who know more than I do talk about him being a standout in the same way Saliba or Fofana were when coming through. He’s the Konate replacement for this season and I fully expect him to be right into the starting 11 and a mainstay for the season.

So one source says LFC might be interested in a cut price deal and another comes out the next day with this alternate take.

There may be some interest and a need for a RB/CB with a bit more experience but somehow I doubt it would be a deal like that

No one rarely goes in swaps and we aren’t paying 150m plus a player.

:joy::joy::joy:

Anyhow glad someone remotely reliable has poured cold water on the VVD deal and when it comes to pouring cold water on stuff Pearce is the most reliable.

A 24 year old from the second tier in Spain feels like the most unreliable of unreliable rumours. Is at least left footed.

Any connection to our manager in anyway?
