The Unreliable Transfer Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 6)

I do wonder if part of the reason Wirtz is struggling to perform is pressure from the size of the fee we paid.

It can definitely happen. Going back aways, but I remember Kevin Davies talking about his record move to Blackburn and how the price tag played on his mind.

I think that’s right. Maybe my trepidation comes from not from the fact that NO player is worth that sort of price, but more from the fact that the players that we got for that price are not providing the quality we needed.
Hence, it may be more a scouting/ascertaining the right fit for the team and tactics and league issue.
But it’s also the issue that if we get it wrong, it hamstrings the team for a few seasons before we can rectify it.
We are not Chelsea or United.
Virgil and Ali…immediate positive impact and clear for everybody to see…from match one. Worth every penny.

Yeah well, when you look at the top 50 most expensive transfers ever, you get a very so-so success rate.

Then it depends also and this is highly subjective, a player who was worth €100m or whatever, maybe wasn’t a total success nor a total flop.

The only one I’ve seen play is Kalulu but I’m not sure about how good he is as it was only a post match clip . Don’t know the other one.

Entirely my sentiment!

At such prices we lose the ability to also bolster the team squad depth.

No matter how good a player is, he has human physical limitations. We need backups of reasonable quality to come in as subs.

When we have to start using kids to back them up, we have a problem.

All the players we should have paid that kind of money have gone to Cheaty unfortunately.

There is value to be fair, it’s about gambling take a look at Jacquet so far that 40m looks a bargain. I would say trying to bring through home grown talent at the academy is the best way to address that issue. Speaking of which is Koumas homegrown, I know he plays for Wales but was born in Chester.

Yes that was a good one it is like winning the jacquet pot with him.

2 signings made the Klopp era VVD and Allison. The rest was icing on the cake as we had Trent!

You can probably find a fair few post questioning it. I do think his smaller deals will probably be his better ones when you look back on Hughes. Saying that both Wirtz and Barcola and Isak were good talents so you can’t fault that. But the way it looked at the end when he was shopping around for Sarr and another player who was injured I just wondered if the effort had gone in.

I think Barcola will come good as his lack of preseason has hampered him. Add the fact that his pal Ekitike will be hopefully fit by then and fire him up further.

Same with Isak last season.

I think we made an error with Wirtz adding muscle mass. We should have concentrated on stamina and agility body positioning or how to use you body. Imo that wasted so much time and complicated things for Wirtz.
The thing is you just have to get on with it. There’s no time for catch up with our schedule. The only way is to play like we did with Isak and hope there’s no thug going to put you out for 6 months.

I think there is a slight difference. Barcola is probably fitter than Isak was at the point of joining, but Isak already had premier league experience. So it could take a season to adjust, or he may find his feet quicker than Isak did…

Feels like a cheap shot but I can’t help but notice this

Unfair!

What about Ngumoha, Koumas and Nyoni? :joy:

I wish we still had the top 3 and bring them on from the bench (they are still playing and doing a good job for their clubs).

Sadly, players that have reached their level are seldom okay being a secondary option, they all prefer to drop down a level if need be but maintain that starting position. Their ego’s can’t take the role change.

Yes I agree sadly.
