I think buying from abroad is the easiest way.
But we do need some homegrown players. A bit underhand but our best bet is probably unsettling them and making them want to leave well in advance so these clubs don´t want to be left with a player who doesn´t want to be there.
How on earth would we do this?! Plus do we really want players who can be unsettled this easily? We’ve had to suffer from this for years, decades even from Barca and Real.
Or maybe Hughes was so busy with the Barcola lengthy négociations that he ran out of time as his private plane for Saudi was ready.

Not really applicable. I think Hughes’s input was deliberately minimal as Gordon was largely involved in that. Plus, I would be very surprised if one deal would take up so much of our recruiting bandwidth.
That certainly makes this summer’s events feel more ‘personal’.
Only jesting I knew we have a whole department to deal with multiple transfers just a dig at the head of that department.
I don’t think it is a case of gazumping, we will know of these players but we will probably be looking at players to fill other needs - we can imagine that this summer priority was for strengthening defence and wings.
Midfield, in constrast, probably needed a closer look to see what changes were needed going forward, so any movement in that space would have been fairly late anyway depending on what we felt we needed and how much money was still available?
Plus clubs like Brentford etc can pick up some of these players, as they are viewed as temporary moves to aid development and earn a bigger payday soon after. Just because someone signs for them it doesn’t mean they would have come to us.
Same way we do now really. Talk to their agents and be clear we want them when the window opens

The reporting is was more about the uncertainty of what was going on with Balogun’s on-off move. They identified those two as the best way to raise the revenue they needed, but would not sell both. And found themselves needing to find a buy when the Flo deal fell through, but then backing out when the Flo deal looked like it was back on.
It sounds slapdash. But I think pretty much everyone knew Monaco’s situation and position and Chelsea waited until the final day to try to make a deal with a club in that position who were simultaneously trying to sell the other player in a “one goes but not both” situation.
I feel for Camara. It’s going to be awkward as fuck between him and Flo at training. But I dont have much sympathy for Chelsea getting screwed

Say he has a good season this year he will cost 80 mil plus from Brentford next year.
So our options would have been to watch him do well and then pay that 80mil after a season at Brentford, or to buy him earlier before he joined Brentford. The second option has more risk that he might not be good enough for us but it’s for a much lower fee.
Basically sign these players earlier when they are cheaper but less certainty they will be of the required standard and with a year or two of development needed until they are.

And the person doing the communication with the selling club is not the only one working on a deal. Especially a big deal like this one where there are downstream implications of how big we need/decide to go to get it done. The DoF is most principally responsible for strategy. That requires synthesizing a large amount of information put together by people who work for him (identifying the potential candidates) and does not require them to be the person in contact with the selling club. If there are lots of moving pieces, as there seemingly was here, it often makes sense to bring in a “closer” for the talks to allow the DoF to stay more focused on moving the pieces around the board.
The online crowing of this being one that Gordon got not Edwards just fundamentally misunderstands how an operation like this works and how these moves all come together.
Find it strange that palace generally are getting a bit of hate here, when they played at anfield the season we won the league, Livvy showed a palace fan recording the day, and it was great to see, they appreciated us clapping them etc…
People seem to forget that it was glasner who was the cunt that ruined it, iirc the chairman was happy to sell us guehi, but cuntface, had a strop and threatened to quit…and then left the club at the seasons end anyway.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if at least one of Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth or Palace make the Champions League in the next 3 years. Due to their recruitment they have managed to simultaneously get better every year whilst making huge profits on players; and as a result they now can’t be bullied easily by traditionally more established PL clubs. Additionally all of them now have managers who are really competent and are able to work with a settled core group for at least a couple of seasons.
Fair play to them to be honest.
We did sell them plenty of players just recently with Benteke, Clyne, Martin Kelly, Sakho
I like how Keith Andrews comes across. Looks tactically sound and very calm and controlled.

I think this is the approach Liverpool have taken recently. Like you say, there’s a choice between the two, and the clubs at the top of the food chain, with the most money, have the opportunity to wait. Gather as much information as possible about the player, see how he adapts to circumstances as close as possible to what he’ll face at their club.
Then there are probably other players where they know waiting isn’t an option; if they don’t buy now, other top clubs will. Jacquet, Leoni and Brughmans are perhaps recent examples of that. I’m guessing these are players with a set of skills they’re confident will translate to Liverpool’s requirements, even though there’s not a great body of work to support that belief.
