It is a cynical point, but I confess having a similar emotion. On the human level I wish anyone a speedy recovery. However, something along the lines of Boris’s disease would show his followers we all should look out for one another. Would be useful to see a drawn and haggard president showing up for the third debate after the second was canceled, shallow-eyed, weak-voiced.
Regrettably, there’s more at stake with Trump’s prognosis than just Trump and his family. That’s really a shame.
I am genuinely fearful for what will happen if he is asymptomatic or able to shake this off quickly. This will be validation the deniers have been searching for in their belief that it is a hoax.
But I also think this is a fascinating example of how wound up and fucked up Trump has us. He is a man leading a team who have for months flouted public health guidance resulting in numerous people close to him getting it, with one even dying. That he would eventually get it is one of the most predictable outcomes there is. Yet today the internet is falling over itself to uncover the nefarious plan behind a fake diagnosis. People are fucking nuts.
On the lighter side, one can imagine Melania is furious, it being the bimbo, Hope Hicks, who brings the pathogen into the inner circle. My goodness, how did she get within six feet of the man? More internet conspiracies.
I suggested to friends recently a scenario in which neither geezer made it to election day. I do hope he didn’t infect Joe Biden, who seems quite a bit more frail than Donald Trump. If one or both of them passes before the election, I’m not at all sure how it would be sorted out. What if, for example, Joe Biden won the election, having passed away two days before it? This has never happened in our country.
Even since before the last election day I have been concerned with the challenge of defeating Trumpism as much as I have been with ensuring he didnt get into office and then getting him out. I was concerned on how it would react to a Clinton Presidency. And once he won I kind of rejected calls for impeachment because I felt it would produce exactly the same sort of response from his followers I was concerned about seeing should Clinton win. to me, the only way you beat the movement, is to give him his 4 years to allow himself to humiliatingly fail and then kick him as a beaten man with a failed ideology.
However, dying from a disease the brought the country to its knees in large part because of his refusal to take it seriously is a pretty strong message as well.
It’s pretty clear cut that the VPs would stand in at the top of the ticket.
We’ve also had similar things occur in other races. In the early 2000s the then Governor of Missouri ran for the Senate and died in a plane crash a few weeks before the election. it was too late to officially replace him on the ballot, and so an agreement was reached that the Governor would appoint his wife were he to win. And that is how John Ashcroft lost a Senate race to a dead man and saw non-politician placed in the senate.
Precisely. This tenure has actually gone worse than I feared it would, yet in my head this less failed version of President Trump would have clearly demonstrated the failings of his ideology to enough people. I think we will still see, but I assumed it would be even more stark of a rebound than we’re seeing.
But dying from a disease he mocked and denied is a pretty powerful signal. Still, Im sure Q Anon will accuse Clinton of working with Putin to poison him.
Would still require an agreement between two parties who agree on very little. Could just as easily end up in the courts, depending upon the scenario. As far as I know, the only brokered presidential election was in 1876, the one from which a deal ensued ending Reconstruction. That deal took place in a commission authorized by Congress.
What do you mean? If you mean congress, I’m pretty sure their only role is in cases where the EC cannot come up with a majority candidate.
It seems to me the process is as follows:
Technically, prior to the election, the national committee has the authority to name a replacement nominee if the original one is no longer available.
As of today, it is past the date to get a new name on the ballot so a dead nominee would stay on the ballot. You could still see some way that a national committee could nominate someone new and make their decision known, but it would surely be an unofficial thing at this point.
It would then be down to the EC to decide who they were going to give their votes to, seemingly from the choices of the dead guy, the original VP nom, the newly nominated person not on the ballot, or the other guy running on the other ticket.
In the absence of coming to a majority for 1 name, it would then go to congress (see Veep )
One he sweats and the fake tan comes out, revealing that is not a human but a clever chameleon disguising as a human, all the policies, decisions, stupidity will make sense.
All of your electors will have to get in their carriages and make the journey to Philadelphia or Washington to select a president after rounds of voting to eliminate each state’s candidate. Just like the way the Electoral College is supposed to work, obviously.
What I find with people like this is that they believe the Earth is flat (for example). You can argue with them until you’re blue in the face but the Earth will still be flat. You eventually take them up in a rocket and actually show them that the Earth is a ball and the answer you get is " yeah but it’s So and So’s fault" and it doesn’t matter".
The trenches have become very deep these days.
if he does get a serious dose and recovers it will be some miracle, showing his strength or whatever flavour of the month etc. and he and all his supporters will ignore everything he has said previously.
I dont see there being any changes from this other than him working an opportunity one way or another. Biden cant attack his Coronavirus action (or lack of) any more. He has to be smarter than that now.
Look at the Comet Ping Pong guy I mentioned the other week. After being shown that what he believed to his core was wrong, he didn’t gain enlightenment, he just moved the goal posts in a way that maintained his core belief (ok, the blood drinking paedo elites werent fucking the kids HERE, but that’s because they were warned and moved their lair).
This is a really deep rooted issue in us, and I’ve seen it present in my professional life over comparatively trivial things like sugar metabolism. But once people commit emotionally to an idea, knocking over the foundational pillar of that belief doesn’t change anything. It just leads them to create new explanations for why they believe the way they do. And so I think the way to change minds on this thing is not with demonstrations of evidence, but in giving them something else to believe in their gut. However, I think the psychological programming from fox and a social media environment that preferentially rewards right wing outrage stories has run so deep that not only do I not know what that message could be, but how you go about presenting it.
