Thiago ALCANTARA: 2020/21

Millie does have a left foot.
One thing is sure Thiago gets better as he shifts to the left more, completely central his passing to the left leaves a lot to be desired and there’s not enough players to his right to cause him to be a threat.

Arbeloa had a left foot, but he was a full back. Milner even when he plays LCM uses his right foot 90% of the time, that’s all fine, that’s not the problem.

I don’t get it. Out of two right footed players in midfield, put the player who’s got the most technique, passing ability/variety, intelligence, agility… as the LCM. Put the better/more talented/more able player. It’s where he became what he is at Bayern as the LCM in a two. It’s the same as teams do at CB when they very often have two right footed CB’s.

Plus, we know how well we are protected on the left side compared to the right, having a not really classic RB and not really classic RW/RF.

I think it’s a Klopp thing. He did this with Hendo and Gini, Ginis the same where ever you put him Hendos best to the right so Klopp puts Hendo left and Gini right. Just baffling!

Again, I don’t even remember Hendo playing LCM under Klopp (not at least in games in a row), but okay.

Yeah, it’s something I’d like to hear from Klopp. Why this persistence. I wrote about it in a long post in the Albert a few weeks ago. I’m sometimes really confused where do we put certain 8’s compared to the strenghts/weaknesses of certain sides of the pitch and other circumstances that might be.

Nice analysis. Agree.

But in this game, I’d rather Klopp had taken off Mane when Curtis came on to shore up the midfield and help the defence.

We were destined to not get the second goal, but we should have grinded out the 1-0.

Fab did just what a lot of people have been crying out for when doing the body slam

Shame Klopp went all passive in out time and never tried to waste some time by bringing on Rhys Williams.

Added to that, the injury time which mainly attended from two cramps for the Barcodes. Why did we even kick it out for the second cramp. It’s no way a serious injury

Looks nice when we’re winning but we’re not.

25 games. 0 Goals. 0 Assists.

Not his primary job to score, I know.

Was never a fan of this signing and soon his game time will have to be managed.

Was it a good idea to bring in someone with a different idea of football? Results say no.

Should have gone for someone who is suited to the simplistic high energy football that won us trophies in the last two years.

No disrespect to what Thiago has done in his career but I don’t think we would have been worse had we kept Grujic instead.

The signing that has brought us nothing.

Grujic is not better than him but at least with him we might have scored some goals after corners and he has a good shot from outside the box. Add 2-3 goals and we have Top4.

But hey, Thiago could find space in a wardrobe with Roseanne.

Because Grujic has so many goals and assists for Porto…

We didn’t have this since probably Xabi.

I quoted this specifically bc I had been posting similar since his arrival. I’m not at all “against” Thiago but I’ve never really understood the signing; in context of how we play, how he plays, his age, the cost, his wages. Specifically, why him? And I’m asking genuinely. Talent and class undeniable. I don’t think he’s world class but he’s a really quality footballer. My question is more specific: What was it about his game in relation to how we set up that the club and JK said, yes, it has to be Thiago.

When he came back from the long injury we were experimenting with so many CB combinations and it had a knock on affect thru the setup. So that’s completely fine, I’m willing to extend a bedding in process made extra strange with our injury issues.

I don’t know if how Thiago is currently being deployed is the grand vision for how/why he was brought in and I have asked that here several times.

He had them for Hertha for two years where he wasn’t sent on a bullshit last second emergency loan in a stronger league than Portugal.

But but but it looks nice.

Fucking Tiki Taka Joga Bonito Bullshit.

He was brought in to transition the ball from our midfield to forwards quicker, as that clip shows just like he’s been doing, breaking the lines, rather than play out wide to our full backs constantly. The fact that our forwards can’t do anything meaningful with the ball when it gets to them is not down to Thiago.

Fair points.

He’s the Gini replacement as we evolve. Hendo will play the RCM role when healthy and our midfield will be completely balanced. We haven’t had Thiago-Fab-Hendo combo yet. I believe this is the balance klopp is looking for.

I think he’s class but I definitely think the project we envisioned with him isn’t the project we are currently performing based on necessity.

Klopp’s style and adaptability is a point for another conversation.

Trouble is that he’s only 5 months younger than our departing Dutchman.

I, too, would love to see the Fabinho-Henderson-Thiago midfield you’ve described, but it’s hardly a long-term solution, is it?

Hard in our team to get an assist with the way our forwards are playing!
146 attempts at anfield in 2021 and only 5 goals (maybe 4)

Thiago at the moment is least of our problems.
