Thiago Alcantara (CM) Bayern Munich

19 major trophies so far for Thiago.

Hopefully he’s up to 20+ soon. :sunglasses:

Didn’t quite appreciate the revisionism comment to be completely honest. It was what it was at the time. I think I am allowed to make a point?

What the actual f*ck!!! Edwards has gone and done it again!!! The money he saved in the deal should go towards building the man his statue!!!

Yeh, there’ll be plenty examples of people’s opinions being borne out or not as the case maybe. Take this one from some poster called Kopstar in July,

“My view is that Edwards gets him for about £20m plus £5m in add ons, to be paid in instalments over 4 years. Probably agree it late in the transfer window, around 17 September would be my guess”.

It’s there. Don’t bother searching for it, I’ve done the hard work for you.

That surgery scar is frightening, though… There’s always a worry that transfers like this one won’t work for Liverpool - I think we discussed on TIA in the very beginning of this link that it would be the first one of this kind when it comes to Liverpool, so it’s uncharted territory for both club and fans. Whether he can adapt quickly enough to league, to his new teammates, embrace the pressure of expectations…

But then again, he was Bayern’s key player, probably their best in the elimination phase of CL, their style of football isn’t too dissimilar to Liverpool’s and he already knows how to deal with pressure of a big club. Hopefully he won’t have any fitness issues, unlike Keita, first and foremost and then we’ll see how Klopp will integrate him into the starting eleven (my first guess: Henderson sitting behind him and Wijnaldum).

My memory is the same. There were very few of us supportive of this deal to start with and less that believed in it. We got a fair amount of stick trying to argue how realistic it was.

Apparently this morning the Echo were blogging that he wasn’t an active target eight minutes before the story broke.

Do we think Edwards did that on purpose?

Lol who cares who said what from a while ago, he’s ours now so have a drink and enjoy the moment :joy:

So how are the blue moon residents reacting to this, hmm? There’s a Thiago thread in transfer section (bwhaaha that itself made my day)

liverpool can pick up bargains for £25 million and then we want a player in the same sort of levels its £75 million. I am starting to believe something dodgy is going on in the back ground ? is it pressure from uefa and the elite clubs on agents to make city pay top dollar and have FFP come into play something stinks here

Dodgy money. The cartel obviously willing to help out one of their own!

Tbf, it might be that he is assuming the cunts who have spent 2 years watching videos of how to stop us, are at last going to try it with Liverpool. So Van Dijk booting the ball down the middle with as much time as he wants, to do so, plus their fullbacks allowed more time & touches on the ball than most players in the league, might be cut down a bit.

Overrated signing imo.

Probably his injury record but that’s not stopped us before. Klopp’s magic inhaler might help him out though

There are quite a few though who see him as quality and wished City signed him, and he adds quality to our midfield.

This was my opening post in the Thiago thread on TIA, back in early July (and yes, I opened up that thread! :sunglasses:)

Several sources talking about this potential move. What we know for now:
Alcantara will most probably leave Bayern this summer if an offer from a top club comes in. The PL seems to be his preferred destination.
He’ll cost between 30 and 35 millions, and most probably ask for a high wage.
My opinion: he’s a jewel of a player, probably the silkiest midfield player since Xabi retired. A wonderful eye for an opening in front of him, and a true reader of the game. World-class. Any club would be interested if he becomes available.

That’s one side of things. The other is recurring injuries and no experience of the PL at 29. A relatively high fee and most probably a high wage. So, is it worth it, and would Klopp say yes to such a player under these conditions?

Dunno, I’m not sure. Juve for instance would be a natural destination for such a player: a slow, ultra-tactical league, world-class players all around him… but there are no rumours linking him to Italy, or a move back to Spain. Our style of football is based on pace and ultra-high physical engagement at all times. Thiago isn’t a luxury player at all, but could he raise to such a level? Maybe… he has the ability to retain possession at an almost unique level. So, he could maybe adapt and add something new to our game.

One can look at it in the following way: Lallana has been a good servant to the club. He’s on high wages, and has often been injured. Replacing him with Thiago would be an upgrade of the squad, while adding qualities which we currently don’t have, especially when Lallana will be gone. The risks will be similar (recurring injuries), but the potential positives of this move might be immense. For a fee which is half the one the club laid out for Keita.

My feeling is that Chelsea or Man City are more natural recipients for that kind of player than us, and that we won’t move for him. But who knows, it’s worth discussing it in here.

I still feel the same about him. I think it’s fully worth the risk, and am really happy that the club are willing to take it.

At the same time, I remember the last time I was that excited about a new midfielder coming in: it was Nuri Sahin… Still think he could have a much better career with us though, if Rodgers hadn’t done his absolute best to waste him.

Before that, Xabi got me REALLY excited when he came in. This transfer is at a similar level for me!

OK everyone. If you predicted this would happen. Go and dig out your message from This is Anfield* and I’ll give the earliest one a fucking biscuit or something.

For the record I’ve been pretty consistent that this would get done eventually, although it’s fair to say that it is certainly out of character for us to get in a lad at nearly 30 on a long term contract. There are few prophets or fools over this.

*Please don’t

I claim that biscuit. :joy:

The last time I was this excited about a signing was probably Torres!

Thiago is going to set Mane, Firmino and Salah on fire!

Seeing as I was the one who did that I would naturally assume you are addressing myself. Pretty poor in all honesty given that I was addressing a snarky comment to myself in the first place. This is neither the time or the place and we’re all pretty stoked by this so apologies if this has lessened that somewhat but rather I’d rather not be addressed so snarkily, ta.

As you asked…

The more I think about it the more I wonder if this could be realistic.

We have never (in my lifetime) been in this position, i.e. basically champions of the world… Our squad is all at, or approaching peak… We are strengthening from a position of absolute strength…

So is this the natural shift for FSG? Consolidate your position, trust the youth set up and recruitment and spend on the absolute best player that Klopp wants/needs for the 1st team irrespective of re-sale value?

Is Thiago that? Undoubtedly, he is a world class player and probably a “type” we miss in games. With the AFCON delayed a year, that need for an attacker is diminished and we are probably hoping 1 of Havertz or Sancho stay put till next summer.

Fuck it… I’m in!

For once in my life I was correct

I knew this day would come, hence I posted a very diplomatic post

Would be a good addition if he signs, won’t be too bothered if he doesn’t. It’s not like we can’t attract talented players anymore and a big name signing not happening will mean huge difference in class on the pitch and impacting our ability to attract other players off it. It’s win win either way considering how things are going currently with us

Where’s my biscuit, John? :stuck_out_tongue:

This was my first real post on it. If we now add a forward as well I’m gonna just assume the position

Hmmmm…

Jürgen Klopp links to drug taking 0
Pep Guardiola links to drug taking 2

I suppose City win that one.

Gotta say, if we get that forward we need, this is an excellent window. We can then decide to do nothing else, or if a midfielder departs, like Gini or another, we can add another CB. Pretty cool.

They’re asking everyone about Thiago :joy:
