Even when in his rough patch he was second best defensively after AWB out of the English RBs and James is the only one who challenges him offensively and he plays more as an out an out winger and keeps losing his place to Callum Hudson Odoi. You can argue Trent was out of form but that was still better than the other options and was a while ago now. It’s like Southgate has just listened to the narratives over the player not actually checked if they’re true.

England have 3 excellent RBs and one new player breaking through who might one day be. Southgate has picked 3 of those and left at home, for a round of meaningless games, the one who in almost everyone’s opinion has been way off his own standards. Even without any 3D chess to understand his motivations, its an entirely defensible position.

I’m really not sure what your motivation is for going above and beyond in your defence of Southgate. He’s picked a 30 year old poorly performing, recently banned Trippier ahead of Trent.
Let’s ignore YOUR reasons the try to justify the decision and what has ACTUALLY been given as the reason is: “I don’t think he’s played at the level he’s been at during the last few years. He’s a big talent and I’m sure he will play a big role for England in the future.”
So purely about him not playing well enough. But yet again has been better both defensively and offensively than Trippier who is 30 and served a ten week ban recently. How does that really make sense?

A week or two in Dubai, then several weeks at Kirkby to play and train together. A proper rest, a proper pre season.
Dont care about Gareth Southgate, more than happy for him to select others. Given circumstances, the short summer this year. The less players we have playing in the eruos the better.

Still don’t think you’ve fully appreciated the concern.
He’s been doing what Klopp has needed him to, it’s been a huge reason we’ve started clawing our way out of the funk.
By doing that he’s now getting over looked for England. Playing for England might be very important for him.
If it is, is the temptation going to be to shine and get his match of the day moments so he can get back into the England side? If so that actually may cost us some of our bitterly fought for and won stability.
What’s good for the player isn’t always what’s good for the club. Last thing we need in this cluster fuck of a season is something ELSE going wrong! Think that’s why Klopp has acted so strongly and so immediately!

Wow edited it now.
The whole post was about being picked for England and how strong a motivation that was for him so if that would effect how he does the job he’s doing for us. So is he going to keep doing what Klopp has been asking? Or revert to how he was with plenty of Match of the day highlight moments to get back in England contention for the summer.
We have been really relying on his incredibly disciplined play helping out the makeshift CBs. If he starts chasing England attention it could hurt us. But what we going to do? It’s what is best for him at the end of the day. Gareth Southgate could have fucked us here.
Hoping against hope Trent doesn’t give a shit about playing for England but somehow doubt it. Or that the media reaction to the decision (universally seen as ridiculous) will convince Gareth to confirm that Trent will still be going the Euros if fit despite being dropped this close to them.

Genuine question: which Liverpool player has consistently performed well for England since Stevie in his prime? I can’t recall anyone praising any TAA’s performance for England or seeing him play that well for them, even on the back of his best games for Liverpool.
