Trent ALEXANDER-ARNOLD: 2020/21

Maybe after England have bombed in the Euro’s and Gareth has been sent packing he can turn the experience into a lucrative advert for a pizza restaurant?

Joyce saying that it’s a bit off from Southgate to comment on Trent’s Liverpool form.

Eh? What should he comment, Trent’s form in bed with his girlfriend? The only two things he can comment on is exactly his Liverpool form, his previous England form and his behaviour off the pitch.

I am also somewhat surprised Trent didn’t get called up (I still think he might go, I don’t think it’s over yet).

But you can’t escape criticism with England it seems, whatever you do. It’s in the culture maybe and just decades and decades of the same old crap. Until they maybe win something. Or some things in a row.

Not long ago the public criticized playing a lot of the same sort of players and forcing individual quality, rather than maybe doing what’s right for that exact team, which lacked balance from time to time.

Now the problem is that Southgate can’t find room for all those between the lines players (and he can’t, really, there must be some decisions made and players left out for a team/squad to make sense and have balance).

Other part of the truth is that Southgate can pick from an unbelievable high number of good players - especially in attack.

23 players squad. 3 GKs.
20 outfield means 6-7 players for Defence, Midfield and Attack each.

Kane, Sterling, Foden, Rashford, Greenwood, Mount would be the 6 I’d take ahead of Sancho.

Then there are also Barnes and Calvert-Lewin.
In such a tournament needing a goal late on Calvert-Lewin as a big man is a great option.

Does Grealish count as an attacker or midfielder?

Not sure, but he definitely counts as a wanker.

Yeah, we have a really interesting squad in that we have a group of 30+ who have legit claims to go but very few who are absolutely locked in to start. It’s healthier, it’s likely easier to put together a coherent team that way, but it means good players are going to be left at home.

Grealish plays in the Coutinho role this season at Villa in the front 3 on the left.

I can already see the havoc in media when Southgate drops a few of those players because he simply can’t have them all. Not starting on the pitch, not even in the roster. He’ll have to pick wisely.

I agree. In general, they have really nice offensive options. Some are already top players, some are inexperienced top talents.

It’s the goalkeeper area and midfield (and I mean proper central midfield, not a bunch of those 10’s and attackers) where it’s suspicious if there’s enough quality, not only individually but how it all functions together.

We’ve got 3 players in the Top ten in the world it’s ridiculous that two of them may not be getting taken to a tournament;

Sancho and Sterling would be my first choice wide players with Rashford and maybe Lingaard backing them up. Grealish at 10 (despite being a wanker), Foden as an offensive 8 backed up by Maddison and Mount. Rice backed up by Phillips as the anchor in midfield. Trent would most definitely be the starting RB I don’t even know how that’s supposed to be a debate. James maybe as cover. The fact Trippier will be picked is hilarious. There’s not a single advantage Trippier gives you over Trent except he’s “one of the boys inne? He’s in the clique like, knows the team and the vibe” and looks like a twat which seems to matter.

I think until winning the PL title there was no doubt that Trent at some point will be Liverpool and England Captain.

Should be undropable for England.

Unless we make the Top4 and/or win the CL the next time Trent gets called up might be under another England national coach

Am i the only one who sort of gets the logic behind Trent not making the England squad.

By his high standards his form has been woeful this season.

And I was thrilled he was left out of the squad. More rest and now he has a point to prove

I can only speak for myself and I acknowledge that it is a slightly contradictory view. I dislike the English national team, the management and pretty much everything that swirls around them be that the media, pundits, WAGS, the cuntish players and so on. I understand that alot of Liverpool fans, including many on here, are English and supporters of their national team so I try to keep my disdain out of sight as much as it is possible.

I bear the sight of our lads in the shirt with a certain grimness and with a certain relief when they are not playing. The same holds true for many of our international players although rarely do I have as much disdain for their teams as I do for England. However, on the other side of that coin is knowing that some of our lads are head and shoulders above the wankers that they are being touted and being recognized ahead of them. Yes, it’s keeping our lads fresh but at the cost of being made to seem not good enough while plodders are being heralded and that is the part that sticks in the throat especially with Trent being dropped. I’m happy he’s had a break and at the same time furious that his obvious ability and his actual performances as the best RB in world football over the past 3 seasons are almost completely unrecognized, his unimaginative, wooden excuse of a national team manager gets to soundbite about him and every compliment paid to him is almost always bookended by something like ‘its just his defensive contribution that needs to be worked on’ as if having such a great actual attacking output (and not one that exists only in what the pundits can visualize) by default means he’s poor defensively.

It is a bit galling to be honest and especially so when some on here try to justify it. I’ve seen nothing of James (who I think is a good player and far better than Wan-Bissaka) or Wan-Bissaka, for example this season, that makes them so far ahead of Trent so as to justify Southgate’s comments.

The irony is that if Southgate had a fucking clue he’d see that Trent’s defensive game has come on leaps and bounds this year. It’s had to - he’s frequently been the leader of that defence at the cost to his attacking game. His one on one defending especially has improved a lot.

It’s like he picks his team based on the daily mail comments section…

Just like every England manager before him.

And still miles ahead of the other options. Trippier had played 5 times since Christmas. Trent, in “bad” form, is still in contention for best RB in the world. The other options don’t even get in the Top 20.

We need to just accept the truth of the matter…
Southgate has NOT got a clue about managing a football team… never mind the national team, never mind man-management skills, never mind up to date tactics, etc etc… they guy is a tosser.!

A bit harsh, that. I’ve met him a couple of times at Crystal Palace events and he’s a genuinely nice guy. He’s just not very good at managing the national football team.

I think the other side of the coin is that Trent is a certainty for the Euros (due to him being the best RB in the world) and maybe Southgate wanted to look at other options.

Honestly though the less of our guys selected for the death trap of International football the better

I have to say but isn’t Southgate doing a half decent job for you lot? (I am Welsh so don’t really have an opinion of him either way) but last World Cup semi final wasn’t it? Up there with the furthest England have gone bar 66
