Trent getting a few pelters for his performance for England, when the setup didn’t suit him.
He is an exceptional player for long through balls & great switches of play and yet England had no width, with Foden always coming inside and Trippier beiing slow and right footed. Then there is Kane, a player with no pace to make runs in behind.
With this how do you expect him to shine.
Southgate, has nil tactical nous and just cannot get the best out of individual players in a team environment.
Thought he did ok, and have heard plenty of analyses saying similar. It’s certainly not his fault that we sat too few in the second half.
Still England fans are England fans and unless we win 5-0 they’ll need to blame someone and Trent is a ready made target with the way pundits already talk about him.
And fans (including our own) need to be patient with misplaced passes, knowing that it only takes 1 or 2 good ones to create a goal. All teams need the safe passers and the risk takers
Trent will not shine in the England set up, unless it is worked on under a competent coach. So, er, unfortunately Trent will not shine.
Everyone is coming into his space to get the ball. His forte is to be on the ball, and use his range of passing to hurt the opposition. But Bellingham is dropping in there, so is Foden, and Saka doesn’t stay wide to stretch it, and even Harry Kane likes to drop deep. They all like to get on the ball at their clubs, and all fancy themselves as a bit of a playmaker.
The point being, the players who Trent could be looking for, and finding, are all coming back into the middle towards him, and it is all bunched up.
He is thus being forced to give it simple, which he can do, but it doesn’t allow him to use his array of passing. If it is going to be like that, the case strengthens for a slightly better defensive player to come in and do a simple job of protecting.
It would not surprise me if Mainoo is phased in and Trent phased out as the tournament progresses.
Agree with all of this, but he doesn’t, from the eye test, seem to be putting the effort in, especially for England but I have also seen it creep in for us, has he fallen out of love with football?
Bit more inclined to hang TAA’s lack of form on Southgate than anything to do with the lad.We will see soon enough, think he may well shine under Slot, certainly hope so,the lad is a class act.
Really? I got the exact opposite impression. He is doing his damnedest in a new position, but Southgate doesn’t even have the conviction to stick with his own decision to use him as a midfielder. He won’t set the team up to get the best out of him and he’ll always take him out after 55-60 minutes, regardless of how he’s performing.
Thought it was harsh to take him off so early last night, he had prob just had his best moments in the game. Still, Southgate had to try something the Danish press was overwhelming us, don’t think Gallagher made a difference tho.
Nice to see a bit of shine taken off Southgate. I think he is massively overrated, and England were terrible tactically. He has built a reputation on a few of the easiest draws you will ever see in international tournaments.
Southgate’s instinct is to drop deep and find shape to protect a lead. He doesn’t have the ability to coach a team blessed with talent like Saka, Foden, Rice, Trent, Bellingham, Kane - he still sets up like he is setting up Middlesbrough to not get beat at Old Trafford.
Although, to be fair I also thought they looked tired.
I’m also amazed there is little on Pickford. Thought he was terrible for the goal.
He’s made top footballers look average - Saka, Kane, Trent, Rice, Foden all struggled in the system.
Interestingly, stats wise, Trent did well - but its hard not to when he’s limited to sideways passes due to lack of movement.
Spain and Austria are two sides that I’ve watch this tournament that have been super impressive in their playing style. They have a plan. Southgate still has that paper bag over his head.
Southgate is faced with a different task today than the one he managed well in his first couple of tournaments. That was not a particularly good group of players but he found a coherent but conservative approach that papered over the worst of its limitations and had just enough in an attacking sense to get by in several games. Today he has a much better collection of parts that require a more proactive approach and he is stuck between trying to figure out how to implement that (while seemingly not having the tools to do it) and feeling the pull to revert back to his conservative home (that critically does not suit this bunch the way it did his previous sides).
The fact he is complaining about lacking a Kalvin Phillips is a great illustration of how limited his tactical solutions were in previous tournaments.
For a young/ish manager, Southgate is still like a dinosaur when it comes to tactics and managing a team of ALL stars… that could. and should, rip any defence apart.
In my opinion, I believe all the players involved in the games thus far, should be exempt from harsh criticism, because everything, and that is literally everything, should land at the feet of Southgate and his inability to gel a side together of really good players, who have bags of talent…!
We see these players every week doing some good stuff on the pitch, whether they just tune out when it comes to Southgate, who knows eh - First and foremost though, they need to know exactly what is expected from them when they are playing, yet it seems as though even these instructions are missing from their portfolio once an England shirt is put on, while under the tutelage of Southgate…
Anyone with a half decent memory from the recent past, could see Southgate has neither the experience of European games, or assembling a team that makes you sit up and take note - He is in the role simply because Hippo Head rocked, and almost capsized the FA boat -
If the guy hasn’t got what it takes to win a competition like this one, then he simply has not got what it takes - we all have our upper limits when it comes to certain things - To me, what is unforgivable… he didn’t bow out after the world cup and let someone else bring some fresh hope to the thousands of match paying fans that have spent good money, and made the journey to add weight to the support…!
I have no interest in the England team, but watching the PL every week, these players should be head and shoulders over most of the teams participating… and that to me, makes it all rather sad…
