Trent ALEXANDER-ARNOLD: 2023/24

maybe he should concentrate on his game…shameful defending…

From what I’ve seen, Slot also toys with the positions of his full backs (in coleration with wingers of course). Sometimes play wider, sometimes a bit more inside. Similar to how Ange does at Spurs when (you compare the average positions of full backs) when they attack more on the inside. Plus, there’s the possibility of a change of position. But first, hopefully we agree on a new contract.

Nothing we haven’t seen many times before.

Anyhow he wasn’t to blame for either goal, the first was a balls up by Robbo clearing it against Jones’ backside swiftly followed by Ibou and Mac not being able to react/clear their lines. 2nd was on Mo not even putting the effort to challenge for the ball.

If you saw a defender in U12s hide from a challenge like that you’d take them off and tell their parents you’re not sure if football is right for them as they appear scared of the ball.

He shouldnt have to be trying to win headers against their CF, but that space is his. It is an absolute dereliction of his responsibility to just step aside and let a forward challenge for the ball in there without even standing his ground, let alone making an honest challenge

Good luck to him!

I wish Trent would sign that contract.

Think he will, just a matter of what the contract says.

Slot got some work to do…

Its because he played in midfield and then would be recovering into defensive areas, meaning he is changing pace from a sprint back to slowing up near the player, making him significantly easier to “dribble past”.

It would help if he put in the effort and it’s not just because he’s transitioning from midfield to defence. Sometimes he doesn’t even try, others he makes a token attempt.

:100:

It would help, but eitherway he would still be one of the most dribbled past players because we have been asking him to do too much. When other teams invert their FBs they have a set up that allows it to happen without overly exposing the FB areas. Trent plays with a RW who can’t be arsed helping out, a rotating cast of RCBs and usually no dedicated defensive midfielder.

Klopp out!!!

Trent can do better defensively, and it is fair to say so. It is equally fair to point out the mitigating circumstances, around how he is deployed and how the rest of the team has been set up.

It’s a little from column A and a little from column B.

As we look to the future, assuming Slot has a clear plan for how he wants to use Trent, then I hope we sign him to a longer term deal, as he is a fantastic footballer.

Lijnders was in charge of the system :person_shrugging: I’m sure its also true that Trent has been agitating for more freedom than playing as a conventional RWB but I don’t think we got the balance right.

We definitely haven’t and I think a big part of that is that Trent himself was injured for maybe 20% of the time we have used the approach. And then even after coming back did so into an ever evolving set of other characters. We made a LOT of changes over the past season plus 6 weeks of the prior one, both in personnel and approach, and our ability to gain any traction and momentum with the new approach was badly impacted by the number of forced changes we kept having to make.

I fully expect Slot to get the right tune out of the very talented TAA, while also tightening us up all over the pitch, which will see the chances that we concede drop significantly.

I expect him to do these things even without personnel changes, even if it won’t be fully dialed in from the get go.

Then when you factor in some reasonable personnel changes, as surely there will be some of that, I think the future looks very bright indeed.
