Trent ALEXANDER-ARNOLD: 2023/24

Romano:

BREAKING: Real Madrid are keeping close eye to Trent Alexander-Arnoldā€™s situation.

Alexander-Arnoldā€™s contract expires in June 2025 and Real are one of many European top clubs following the situation closely, as they always do with top players.

There are currently no talks underway over new deal, Kloppā€™s departure and leadership changes at Liverpool led to situation where European top clubs believe they can have a chance to sign Trent already this summer.

Alexander-Arnold has played multiple positions for club and England in the recent years, adding to his value.

Liverpool have not indicated any desire to sell the player at this stage, despite unprecedented contract situation for player who has over 300 apps for them.

Thereā€™s also no indication of Alexander-Arnoldā€™s viewā€¦
ā€¦but Real Madrid are among top clubs following the situation closely in case new deal wonā€™t be agreed.

Like it says, doesnā€™t mean heā€™s going, but this was all expected, that there would be some smoke.

This is Trentā€™s moment in his career to think hard where to spend his peak years.

Youā€™d expect us to hold good cards for agreeing a new contract, but I guess that heā€™ll want to wait who comes in as Kloppoā€™s successor before committing his peak years to the club.

There is some legitimate uncertainty around this. Trent was in the middle of a reinvention of his role, and two key things have happened: the manager is leaving, and a genuine alternate has emerged in Conor Bradley, although it is obviously still early days for him.

Will the new manager want Trent as a fullback? Wingback? Playmaker stepping into midfield from his defensive position? Or a midfielder?

All of a sudden there are questions. His quality is not being questioned, but the requirement of the new manager, and how Trent fits into the team, will need to be answered.

More unsettling from Madrid tabloids etc.

Hes future Liverpool captain. Going nowhere.

Iā€™m wondering if the only question in his mind is how long more Virgil will be holding on to the armbandā€¦

If thats a factor playing on his mind iā€™d be very disappointed in him.

Why would Real want to unsettle Liverpool right now?

Real have been getting by with unsatisfactory options at RB for a couple of years. Carvahal is their only legit RB and he is an old 32 who is seemingly only capable of playing about 50% of their games these days. Their only alternatives have been shifting players out of position, primarily two similarly aged long standing utility players who are only still at the club because theyā€™re willing to not play, or only play in unusual positions.

Carvahalā€™s availability issues are not recent, so they have seemingly been content to perservere with this situation for a couple of years. Presumably, biding their time to find the right replacement. It would make sense theyā€™d have an eye on Trent for that, and if they did it is understandable they would feel recent developments at the club and his contract situation would make now the right time to see if they could generate any interest from him. But this is Realā€¦if they have interest in a different RB it still makes sense for them to float interest in a high profile player it would make sense to people theyā€™d be interested in to give them cover and/or leverage in that pursuit.

I meant that in the sense of it being the only question about his Liverpool future, as heā€™s not interested in being anywhere else.

Add to this, heā€™s pals with Jude, who was only just flirting with him on social media day before yesterday.

I know all of that, I meant more if itā€™s Real only trying to unsettle us. Iā€™d be surprised if Real only had one target for the RB spot. If Trent is one of those on their list, then thatā€™s alright. Itā€™s a basic info, itā€™s not the absolute campaign Barca players had when they were chasing Fabregas (that was ugly to watch even from a neutral position). Things get found out also, itā€™s not only a battle of leaks or whatever. We canā€™t portray it depending on whether we like the news or not. Whether someone reliable says weā€™re in for Bellingham (must be true) vs there are news about Real potentially coming in for Trent (must be shite).

The spent most of last year flirting with each other.

Remember itā€™s why we all thought he was coming here.

Nicol offering shite over here saying heā€™s too bad a defender to continue with now we have Bradley so if Real offer 60m we should bite their hands off.

A 60 million right back or a 100+ million central midfielder? Decisions, decisions.

Heā€™s a great player so ideally Trent signs a new deal and stays for the duration.

Playing devilā€™s advocate, in a world where Trent goes to Real Madrid, we need to do a deal with Rodrygo coming this way.

I think itā€™s plausible, as with Mbappe and Endrick coming in, playing time for Rodrygo might get tougher. Rodrygo adds pace, width, and versatility to our forward positions. He also helps us adapt to a future beyond Mo Salah, whenever that finds us.

Dyche did what Dyche always does - target Trent in the air, the absolute tactical genius. However, Trentā€™s occasional tendency to completely switch off in defensive situations makes me tear out my hair. Heā€™s shown quite a few such moments over the course of past two seasons, especially in one-on-ones. I hope he extends his contract first and foremost but thatā€™s one of the first things heā€™ll have to improve.

New coach might also have different ideas for him - personally, I think his time at right back is up and that he will become a midfielder, where those one-on-one defensive deficiencies will hopefully be toned down. It would be awesome if he could become a deep-lying midfielder, so that Mac Allister and Szoboslai could play in their natural roles ahead of him.

Yeah, lots of talk in the match thread about problems with the defensive schemes on the second goal, but no approach can accommodate a defender doing what Trent did.

He doesnā€™t seem entirely happy at the moment; whether than because of his relationship with Klopp, how heā€™s used in the team, or he has personal issues going on off the field whatever it is something is not engaged right now.

I still think heā€™ll play at RB next season but I think we will see him go back to getting his boots chaulky and try and get him flying down the wing again. If the new manager is Slot then Iā€™ve seen a lot of people refer to him using a 4231, so I could imagine Endo/Bajcetic someone like that being asked to cover the space like Fabinho used to before he went shit.
