Accept it or not, the media downplay our player a lot. If Trent played for Real Madrid and delivered the same performances as he does for us, no one would question that he’s the best right-back in the world. Now, not only the media but even some of our fans are questioning his quality.
Trent has won everything he could, and at this stage, I think he’s seeking the recognition he feels he deserves.
If he played for Real like he has for us in the last 2-3 years he would be alternatively lauded and destroyed. As soon as that club went into ‘crisis’ he would be fingered and you can bet things would turn sour. I can’t see him lasting more than 2 seasons there and he’ll look back wistfully (ala Owen) if he leaves.
Not sure why this potential move and fan reception in the future needs to be compared to Owen’s. Time will tell and each to it’s own, but he’s still active and things change. If he decides to leave, it’s a shame to lose him of course, but I won’t be bitter. Ultimately you continue with people who want to be here, it’s the only right way. There doesn’t need to be any drama. He’s been great for us already and if he wants to try something new in the next contract that will take him to 30+, I understand it. Not all one-club (or up to a certain point) locals or legends will act in the same way.
Judging by the reporter, it must be “a day with player x” that LFCtv is doing. Jones was the last one. So absolutely nothing to do with either staying or going.
I agree with all that. The only thing I’ll say is that it’s pretty rare, at least in the last few years, for him to be a standout performer for our team. I doubt he’s been in the top 6 in our polls too often over that period. This year is irrelevant in that regard as those polls will be coloured by talk of him leaving.
Trent recently has become a one killer ball player rather than a dominator. He’ll be having a very quiet game then suddenly he’ll deliver a bending 40 yard pass splitting defence and kill the match with that one final ball. In a game like football where a game is often decided by a single moment, that’s everything, so don’t take that as me talking him down.
The thing is, in my opinion, that is enough. Sometimes the threat of action from a player can be an effective enough deterrent for opposing teams playing against us. They will alter their play and set up differently. Bradley has done nothing wrong, so it’s not a criticism of him, but I don’t ever see him being threatening enough for opposing teams to alter their style to limit his ability.
Trent has that. He will be a huge loss when he goes.
