Actually some of this can come from poor coaching with an emphasis on possession and making them afraid to make the forward pass through the lines, in case they lose possession.
They then need a coach to rewire their instinct to encourage them to see the pass and play it.
This isn’t as easy done as said, as making that small delay in seeing the pass to mentally making the decision to pass can result in pass opportunity going or being intercepted.
There is an academy here in NZ which is popular, but I hear on the grapevine that the players pass for passing sake rather than as a means to an end.

Cheers, it’s interesting though, because Nyoni has presumably had the same coaching/philosophy as all the first team players
They have spent years being told to keep the ball and these pointless rondas that don´t go anywhere.
But also it takes a bit of guts to risk losing the ball and the great players at passing it through know the value of an early pass or can see the flow of passes ahead of them. They have the composure and understanding of how the game flows and the impact of each pass.

I still remember Trey coming on for that first appearance and thinking omg, that boy looks about 12. Of course, now he looks all of 15.

Well, they did identify and acquire Nyoni at such a young age, so they wouldn’t have to pay 100M for a player in that position later. Now, let’s give him a chance to impress, that should be one of the biggest positive changes from the last season.

Seeing a no of Liverpool type accounts claiming Iraola is lining up Nyoni to start the first match of the season because he fits his system better than the alternatives.

Fascinating if true. Particularly what it is that Iraola wants in his team that he thinks Nyoni brings.
Whether it´s for the defensive instincts (very good from pre season) or the progressive passing evem (I think he does reasonable well if not a proper playmaker). I think he is better in both those areas than Grav.
I´d be happy to see him start.
May consider to play him the same way we played Gerrard in 2013/2014.
I guess Szobo would be like Henderson was alongside Gerrard.
I think he´s more of a positive Fabinho but for now I think that might be alright.
Wouldn’t be against it, from the little I’ve seen he looks very good. I think Gravenberch looked like he needed some time to get up to speed, we’ll see how he plays tomorrow, and Mac isn’t even back in training.
I believe Iraola used different midfield types at Bournemouth, so I’m not sure he has a specific type he wants there. But Nyoni has been training since day one and is more familiar with things, so I could see him starting based on that. And as I’ve mentioned before, I think he’s a good complementary player next to Szoboszlai.

He deserves to start the season if meritocracy is in play, as his displays during preseason have been excellent.

Gravenberch frankly is never comfortable when we play real fast football. Even in 2024-2025 wee already slowed down our game compared to Klopp years. You can look at how he struggles in 2023-2024, and Iraola football will resemble 2023-2024 more than 2024-2025.

So what is his purpose? Why play him?
Real question,
Maybe to close out games or slow games when we are already winning
Also, perhaps against low block teams he might be useful bringing the ball forward getting past a player or two, Ireola won’t have had to do that much at Bournemouth

Remember that Grav was never a first choice under Klopp. He may end up like that again if Nyoni can deliver in official matches.

Hm, haven’t really thought about that. He didn’t get to play that much for Klopp from what I remember, but it’s true he’s not a quick passer. He’s a quick dribbler though, great at finding that sort of solution when being pressed. And that’s something Iraola likes as well, players who can carry the ball when the pass isn’t on.
I’m sure Iraola will find a way to let him use his strengths, he’s said to be a player focused coach. As in, seeing what a player is and does, and finding a good way to use that. Rather than, this is what I need to make my system work.

I can’t remember him standing out during the World Cup; at least, I haven’t read anything about it, nor did I catch anything about the Dutch team on the telly.
It wouldn’t really be fair, in my opinion, if Nyoni were to lose his place to him.
