You’ll have us all in grey overalls next Mr Orwell. A fucking embarrassment. Maybe to you, I hope you remain in the minority.
Ptt logic.
Being opposed to the monarchy means you also secretly desire to live in a totalitarian hell state.
The USA rejected the monarchy. Do they all wear grey overalls there as well?
Fucks sake.
Scrapping an institution revered, respected and envied the world over that generates huge wealth and is a keystone of our culture and history is a very mad left view. As for Americans, never met one who didn’t make a point of telling me how much they loved our royal family. Citing their system as a paragon after recent events is not your greatest example. Guess what, you and I disagree on something.
Bet you think Coke’s nicer than Pepsi too.
This isn’t a matter of disagreeing. I have my opinion and you have yours.
The problem here is that your reaction to my opinion is to leap to suggest that because I don’t support the monarchy, then I want to live in a 1984 style totalitarian state.
To be frank, that’s a fucking stupid and insulting comment and if you had any integrity you’d apologise.
Imagine the offence you’d take if I called you a fascist who wanted to live in Nazi Germany when you express one of your right wing views.
And you once called me a fucking cunt for voting for BREXIT and never apologised for wanting my parents dead. Integrity? Ha.
Our next head of state, surely?
I’d take our constitutional monarchy over the U.S. system every day of the week and twice on Sunday with the Queen. Even with Charles I’d consider it highly superior.
Is it ideal? No. But every system is imperfect and this may well be the least bad.
Got you.
I just find it a bit screwed up that this is being pointed out when you politicians on government right now that will change tack on a whim, lied to the public and completely screwed the country for personal gain.
I’d argue there’s far less patriotism there. When challenged though they turn round and shout “statues”
Fair comment, my concern is that the monarchy is an English thing. Its defined that way from it’s pretty savage history and even to this day it is English in its manner etc. To me it does not represent the whole of the UK and never will.
It’s the English clinging onto to some past glories which in reality were won with a huge amount of spilled blood.
The idea of monarchy assumes that some people are born better than others. This is totally at odds with democracy and therefore I can’t understand how it is defended by anyone in a democratic country.
The idea that the royal family promotes tourism is pretty flimsy. Tourists flock to Versailles and the Taj Mahal despite the absence of living monarchs. If the public were allowed access to Buckingham palace I’m sure they would flock there too.
People in other countries enjoy the UK royal family as a soap opera. It doesn’t mean that they all wish to return to feudalism.
It is a symbol of privilege, subjugation and class politics and has no place in the modern world.
I do wonder how many of those tourists so enamoured with the Windsors actually get to see one…
I imagine it would be less than 1%.
I’ve long argued that Buckingham Palace should be turned into a hotel. You’d be able to charge American and Russian tourists whatever you like and they’d pay it.
You’d erase the national debt within a decade.
I never did either of those things, and you know it.
But it’s OK. You think that an appropriate response to someone who disagrees with you on the monarchy is to immediately equate that to backing totalitarianism. You’re very strange.
Which is all true. Nobody should be born better or higher full stop. However the benefits outweigh the cons. I do appreciate that to some the principle outweighs the advantage.
Yes. Quite a definitive position, that.
Hang on. Which is it? If nobody should presumed higher or better at birth full stop, then by definition the benefits cannot outweighs the cost.
The point is that if you believe everyone is born equal and no-one should be put in a ruling position of by birthrite, then that is a fairly non- negotiable position. Their can be no buts.
If you accept the monarchy for any reason, then you agree that some people are just ‘born better’ than others.
Is feeling British over?
I’ve always felt English
If you’re Royal, you can feel whoever you want - younger the better.
Personally, I’ve always felt British before English.
You should all be on The Big Questions Zoom wall!
I don’t accept that they’re born better. They’re born into a role which, correctly conducted, does great service to our country. Pretty sure that even in her grand old age, the queen works harder than most people. Yes she has no money worries but I’d imagine that hearing her side of the story would not be all champagne and comfy couches. She’s very much a public servant.
There are lots of things you can’t be in life if you’re born in the wrong place. You’ll never be American president if you’re not born there. You’ll never be F1 champion unless your parents are wealthy. You’re not going to be an astronaut unless you’re born with a very high IQ and if you’re born in any one of a million hideously poor places on earth, you’re pretty much knackered. Where you’re born and to whom you’re born makes a massive difference. Always has, always will. Would the queen swap it all for being born ER Smith in Croydon, had a normal life away from the media glare and enjoyed her retirement? Quite possibly I’d imagine.
But come on, did you watch the Olympics opening ceremony? If that didn’t make you proud of her then I guess that’s that.
