UK Politics Thread (Part 1)

Parents or family Welsh or Scottish?

Never was a thing in some parts.

What about if the monarchy, instead of being abolished because it is a symbol of elitism, morphed into a position more in line with modern values?

If the head of state was seen as a servant to the public, less than a leader.

FWIW I think there’s much worse things going on in the world than a hereditary ordained position as a symbolic servant of your great nation.

I understand some of the resentment, but a lot of it seems aimed at a very Victorian or earlier version of the crown.

She gets a big big house, but they also sacrifice a hell of a lot.

I can think of worse things than a leader who was shaped for the role from a young age and who’s family is financially secure enough not to have to corrupt the system.

Absolutely, the un-corruptible aspect is very important.

I’ve said before I don’t mind the Queen as a person. Of course it isn’t her fault, she’ll have shit to deal with and all that. On the whole though, she has lived a live of grotesque luxury and privilege.

What I object to is the way that the Monarchy establishes the very principle of inequality in our society. You rightly say that who you are and where you are born has a massive impact on what you can achieve - which is true in this country too. But tolerating a monarchy says very clearly that your bloodline, your pedigree, matters. The blood you carry in your veins matters, because we allow these people to demand our money, our power, and our obsequient subservience.

If you lament inequality, and think everyone is born equal, and support this institution you are guilty of hypocrisy. You can’t say everyone is equal, but some people are more equal than others - and you throw the Orwell metaphors at me?

The tourism argument is horseshit as well. The history is there already, the buildings and the ceremony, and states that have shaken of this infantile state of affairs, do fine.

And I did feel proud at the Olympic Opening. Never more than the NHS section.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

I don’t think that’s actually possible. The concept of monarchy is anti-democratic, elitist.

To be honest, I think the Monarchy is in its last days regardless. Younger people are far more stridently anti-monarchy than the old, and most of the support is based around the nice little old lady who sits at the top of it.

When Charles is king (and it will be Charles - talk of skipping a Generation renders the whole idea of hereditary Kings and Queens utterly pointless) I think public support will ebb away. He’s thick as two short planks, a figure of ridicule, interferes far too much in democratic affairs, and the public just don’t like him.

My point is that everybody should be born equal but I acknowledge that they’re not. That’s not hypocrisy, that’s acceptance of reality. Why are we here on this forum? Because due to our birth or circumstances we’re Liverpool fans who don’t believe that you have to be born within the shadow of Anfield to have an opinion. Bunch of wools the lot of us.

We get very excited when fabulously talented people do things with a football that we could only dream of doing. No amount of graft or hard work would have got me a starting birth at Accrington Stanley (who are they?) let alone Liverpool. We support a club who’s results are largely based on paying the most talented footballers, QED those born with the greatest advantage. That advantage is often (but not always) genetic. The blood in their veins. Fair? No Just? No Fact? Yes

Neither. My Dad is English born to English parents. My Mum was South African, born to South African parents.

I’m sure going back further there would be Welsh, Scottish maybe Irish ancestry but none that I could claim an association towards. I’ve just always felt British. Maybe it’s the passport?

I think that’s a gross misrepresentation and when you say “public” is this like one of those sweeping statements like “the public now want to rejoin the EU” that actually means, “the people I choose to listen to”?

He’s been a great champion of the environment, human rights, charitable foundations, conscientious planning, organic farming, local produce, actually remarkably socialist ideals.

We’ll see, I suppose. I certainly appreciate a lot of the things he says (and some of it is good, some less good), but it’s inarguable that he’s also a figure of mockery and ridicule as well. It is certainly noticeable that a lot of people’s support for the monarchy is actually more accurately described as support for the Queen.

By the way, according to YouGov The Queen’s popularity is 73% (positive opinion) and Prince Charles is 47%.

That might get a boost when he becomes king, but it might not.

Plus his Dutchy Original stem ginger biscuits leave one outstandingly gruntled.

Duchy Originals
