Based on a survey of its members, the Road Haulage Association estimates there is now a shortage of more than 100,000 drivers in the UK, out of a pre-pandemic total of about 600,000.
That number included tens of thousands of drivers from EU member states who were living and working in the UK.
I hadn’t realised it was that bad but I guess it’s one of those things that’s difficult to count. Certainly lots of drivers have decided to work in Germany etc. now.
One area I want to understand a little better is the shipping side of things. There’s a massive issue with securing containers from China etc. with prices going through the roof I’ve seen quotes going up to $20,000 when they were previously $8,000 and you have to bid to get a container as if its some auction. I’ve been considering a new paddleboard this Summer but there are simply no composite built boards on the shelves in the UK. 2022 boards are due out this Autumn and the UK hasn’t even seen any 2021 boards as yet. Some estimates put it as stocks arriving in December! There is also a huge shortage of materials to make the boards themselves.
Embarrassing that Wales voted for this while the outcome was totally predictable. Might as well throw some COVID driven Austerity onto the fire as well while we’re at it.
No. The real fear I think is that the EU and Covid will be blamed for it which will heap pressure on those parties that actually warned of it. They need to get their messaging sorted and out there ASAP.
but with Brexit being the trench warfare that it is no one is going to stand up and shift over to admitting that this is was an inevitability of leaving the EU.
Worth noting I also think that Wales voting to leave was part of the same message where the EU was blamed for the previous decade of Austerity and difficulties faced by the nation.
I wonder if Scotland will press on with the idea of independence. The stars seem to align very well for them right now. Of course, they had the chance to get out under Cameron some time ago and rejected it by democratic vote.
But the situation, and thus the general mood, has obviously shifted by now, and more importantly, the EU would probably react very differently to the news of Scottish independence. It could be followed by Scotland’s reintegration into the EU.
It would be a blow for the UK obviously, but I can see it happening, depending on what happens in the next years. It obviously depends first and foremost on the Scottish people themselves.
