Probably true.
That old chestnut of an argument emerges though as soon as you mention the word republic - “think about the loss of revenue from tourism though”
Like the Royal family are actually on site greeting the tourists at Buckingham Palace - Just as the Indian Royal family does at the Taj Mahal and of course you often see the Queen of France handing out baguettes at the Eiffel Tower.
I wouldn’t have a problem with them - but all that land, all that money, all those houses - and their “subjects” are sleeping rough on the streets.

My only consolation at having a Royal family is the alternative of having Boris Johnson as President. That’s enough to send shivers down my spine to be honest.
Interesting thought. What if Wales managed to secure independence, while Charles was still alive (and not King). I wonder what would happen to his title? He’s lose that surely.
I guess it depends upon whether Wales would want to be a republic or not? Wales could become independent of the UK without getting rid of the Royal Family.

Why would Johnson be President? He seems over challenged by the job already has.
There are any number of perfectly viable ways of choosing a head of state, if one is deemed necessary, all of which are preferable to selection based on being a descendant of the Elector of Hannover.
Just purely theory crafting on my part because of the mountain of support he gained at the last election. If we were voting for a president at that time he would have secured the job I guess.
Not that it really matters. 80 seat majority and ignoring process etc etc. he’s doing what the f*** he likes and is instructed to do by those in his ear.

And he’d get the same majority again tomorrow if not higher.
I’m not convinced by that. The recent NI hike and dropping the Universal Credit £20 a week payment has not gone down well at all.

I suppose I am not surprised to see the UK government engaging in the same magical thinking about the energy sector that they employed with coronavirus in March 2020.
It is pretty simple, you can make a 2x2 matrix of supply and demand, the UK’s system of a retail price cap and full market exposure on the wholesale side misses one box. It is almost exactly what happened in California 20 years ago, just a matter of time before even the big players face insolvency.

My counter to that is to ask my interlocutor just how much Russian/Arab/American tourists would pay to sleep at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.
We would easily recover any supposed losses in tourism revenue by converting all the royal properties into hotels.
