They’ve tried to lump everything together into one payment and one system which on paper feels like a very logical thing to do. But its introduction was a disaster because each case is basically unique and each needs to be reviewed.
For me though it feels very broken that wages are below what is required to survive and that needs to be propped by a benefit system. I completely concede that it’s not possible to completely eradicate that concept as there are people who’s needs are greater than their ability to work.
Worth noting though that I don’t believe you can just sort this in one swoop. You need to address it all from top to bottom. For example, Corbyns supporters shouting for £15/hr minimum wage is admirable but that equates to £31k per year salary. All of those people that currently earn £30k all of a sudden are below that minimum threshold.
Basically it all feels very broken, especially when you look at the top and then look at some of the jobs that are currently minimum wage. Care workers for example.
Stumbled onto this earlier and I honestly find it a little disturbing.
Here’s an excerpt from the article. One of the great ideas before I left was we do trial by television on the guilty men of Brexit – those who tried to stop it, like Lord Adonis and Nick Clegg.
‘I said: “Why do you want to do that? You won the referendum.” We’re out. But let me remind you that was the most miserable period of modern British politics. We should be looking forward to the 2020s. Another suggestion was that we should put secret cameras in classrooms to show how Left-wing the teachers were. I said: “That’s a really good idea but I think you should take charge of that yourself, and I promise you that after you get in hot water for breaking about five different laws – including filming minors – come back and talk to me.”
Here you’ve got proof of how certain people are using the media and how far they are willing to go. Their beliefs are utterly twisted.
They’ve had a host of technical issues by all accounts. I suspect it might simply be wound up in the end as it hasn’t really taken off as they had hoped. It would be great if something happened that could really lift the lid on a few people there.
I sort of get where he was coming from that he didn’t want it to be Fox news, ie not just making shit up. But at the same time the channel was claiming to be fair and balanced and unbiased, yet everyone seemingly apart from Andrew Neil could see exactly what the channel was going to be. He has never struck me as a naive person, so while I will give him the benefit of the doubt, the cynical side of me wonders of it was just the lack of promised power/control that was his main beef, and not the ideological shift that he perceived.
I think for him it was more about the stupidity with which they were doing it, making it lose all credibility from the outset. I’m guessing what he wanted was simply to make a right-wing media organisation with the air of honest journalism, just somehow tilted all the way to the right.
I think he’s a bit precious and suddenly realised the amount of work that’s required to start something anew like this. Work that he’s never had to do before and simply didn’t have the skill set for. I think he’s a bit of a prima donna. That combined with some of the BS he was being asked to push was even too far to the right for even him.
Yes, but because I was bored I tried to look it up. While you are correct, LNER only serves King’s Cross in London, which does not have any direct trains to Manchester.
Now, this could be true if he was in one of Leeds, York, Edinburgh or Glasgow. More keen train enthusiasts could probably identify the train and platform/station, to further eliminate possibilities, but there you go.
