UK Politics Thread (Part 1)

The clarification that was merely qualifying why, in Mascot’s opinion, they may have been particularly more likely to be thick or gullible? That clarification?

The clarification that he didn’t think the way you’re portraying, with an explanation for why “because they were sold a lie” applies in his thinking?

I think you love being disingenuous around Brexit, even though you are quite clearly an intelligent person. I’ve learnt so much from many of your posts, but this is just the one thing that you can’t seem to let go of, even though you’ve already acknowledged before (since I’m trawling through the thread right now) that you didn’t even think your preference for Brexit (EEA/EFTA) had anywhere close to popular support ahead of the referendum. @Mascot is quite right in pointing out that so many of the claims around Brexit were not just misleading, but downright lies. You’ve never addressed the point that even though “sovereignty” was the leading motivation that most people claimed for voting to leave the European Union, few of them could actually even articulate what that meant, or in what way we didn’t have sovereignty in the European Union.

It does make me quite bemused, as I do love reading many of your posts that make me ask important questions around my presumptions, like the LNER trains post from yesterday. But on Brexit, you’ve been wrong more often than right, and you never seem to want to admit it.

I’d beg to differ with the obvious caveat that many of the things about Brexit that I think will transpire can only be seen over a lengthier period than has currently elapsed.

But do feel free to give examples of where I’ve been wrong.

For me it’s done. It’s extremely sad that people can’t understand that everything that has happened thus far was pretty much predicted. Happy for people to look at what John Major was saying back in 2016 if you need that reference. He even predicted a lorry driver shortage. Quite remarkable for someone so grey.

What’s really horrible is the utter state of denial we are in. There’s no chance of progressing while the real truth is still being massaged, ignored, denied, whatever.

That basically means there’s little chance of sorting it in a pragmatic way. At least a few got a peerage from it. :no_mouth:

I wonder how he’ll react to the inevitable pea shortage?

I think we do agree on that, but obviously in different directions.

I did, just above. The whole idea that Brexit wouldn’t have happened if people hadn’t been outright lied to, for example. Others before me have catalogued it much better, and I honestly cannot be bothered to go back through the thousands of post I’ve already read through now.

Honest question. Do you think the current government will be able to put the UK onto the path for these mysterious benefits you speak of?

I said people were sold a lie. I said nothing about anyone being thick.

It’s remarkably unfair to put those words in my mouth.

Is the idea that Brexit was carried on a tissue of lies still contested at this point?

This feels incredibly tone deaf to me. Surely there are some far more important questions that need answering at this point in time.

BBC News - Commons Speaker wants Met Police to explain Wayne Couzens’ Parliament work

Well, there are other questions - but it is a fairly serious question. Any protective detail officers are presumably expected to be screened carefully, more than the standard beat cop. In this particular case, a significant percentage of those he would have been trusted to expect would be women, often working late and somewhat isolated.

Which is a big reason why people won’t admit to the whole thing being a problem.

Thankfully Marmite stocks seem to holding up but I will need to check prices. Sadly however the list of shortages continues to grow. Pasta and vinyl for records being 2 new ones according to the Guardian.

This hole just gets deeper doesn’t it? The man was nicknamed “the rapist” and that didn’t raise any flags either.

He was actually permitted to carry a gun FFS.

Sadly whatever trust was left in the Police seems to have completely blown to shreds.

Don’t disagree it is a very serious question, but an out-and-out predator was allowed to walk amongst all of us.

Obviously the speaker is going to be focused on Parliament, but there is much more to be said here and I would have thought publicly asking these questions in the week the details were released is far too soon.

Society as a whole was let down by these failings, not just those who sit in Westminster.

But I take your point.

Flour. Eggs. Water. Little bit of olive oil.

Pasta.

I’ve got loads of bog roll so feel free. I’m ready for that crisis this time.

Translation: yes

Surely the egg came before the chicken?
