If it’s that or lose the house and see my family starve? Pass the pen, I’ll sign now. Although as a full qualified ADR driver I can do better anyway. But the simple point stands, people out of work and jobs available.
As would I, well almost, there are limits. I doubt I could work in a abattoir for example. In some ways I’m doing that now working in a job that brings me nothing but stress and very little satisfaction. But it pays the bills and has allowed my partner to set up her own dream business.
But even then I cannot apply that logic to everyone in the UK nor could I say that I would take a job in Chester (for example) that would cost me 3-4hrs travel every day and a hefty fuel bill along with it. If that job was minimum wage it wouldn’t be worth my time. That’s just not feasible or even sensible. I also couldn’t jump in and drive a HGV tomorrow. Firstly I would have to apply to get a company to take me on for the training and secondly the training takes time. That’s not an overnight thing.
I also fear that one day if I stay in Engineering I may be forced to work away from home again, just to keep the bills paid. That is a thought that haunts me deeply from time to time. I’ve done that for over 20 years and have the scars to prove it.
I am sure that if we keep voting the Conservatives back into power, they’ll end up creating a standing army of forced labour to deploy where they choose for barely subsistence money.
They’ve had one crack at that already, with workfare.
Horrible thought. Cherry picking, literally for one week etc.
Don’t worry about that. The Tories are planning to lower the standard needed to drive a HGV. Which is a completely sane thing to do.
Do you think “Digger World” will become a training hub or a centre for finding talented excavator drivers of the future?
And the even simpler point stands that it isn’t that simple.
Where we are is that people do not want to do those jobs. Very few of them will be serially unemployed or taking the piss with the system. Most of them will be unemployed for a relatively short period and are actively looking for suitable work.
So are you going to essentially force people in to jobs that not not only do they not want to do, but that will actively screw any opportunity for them to do what they do want to do in the future?
That’s not common sense, mate. It’s totalitarianism.
What a dreadful shame, I don’t want to pay insanely high business rates to subsidise their lack of desire to graft.
It’s like having a conversation with the 1870s.
Always joked that Jnr must call me father. I’m a Viz character, what else can I say? Should change my username to Victorian Dad.
But I just worked out that I worked 7-11 Saturday (16 hours) and just 8-6 yesterday (10 hours) and I can currently see 4 people drinking beer (as they often do) at the side of my business with not a chance in the world of doing a day’s work.
Boris is at fault for their indolence obviously.
Think that would be Tony Blair to be honest?
The problem, as always, is your tendency to view a tiny sample of society - a sample that confirms your own cynicism and bias - and make vast sweeping generalisations about thousands, if not millions, of people. It’s a staggering lack of empathy.
You’ve previously criticised me for making generalisations about Brexit voters, and the reason I get frustrated at you is that you do exactly the same.
Anyway, maybe ten more years of Tory Government we’ve got workhouses again. You’d probably heartily approve.
I don’t refer to calling them, well, you know.
And yes I admit I suffer from confirmation bias. I’m human, it’s a genetic trait.
I’d train as a bricky if we could have workhouses back
Should we agree that ultimately we should both stick to posting in the religion thread?
Peace
Maybe @Klopptimist is actually Jacob Rees Mogg? After all, two of the latter’s children were once photographed in Liverpool shirts…
My word you flatter me.
As it happens, for a reason, I’m rather partial to the guy.
Good for them.

I’d honestly love to hear why. Got to be on par with someone supporting Everton

Backed Brexit to the hilt while quietly moving his assets to the Republic of Ireland. Legend. Or something.
Horrible thought. Cherry picking, literally for one week etc.
I once did lettuce picking as a 18 or 19 Yr old. I did it for one day. It was probably, physically, the hardest job I ever did. I obviously wasn’t particularly good at it either as I wasn’t called back the next day (I was not alone) but frankly, I was grateful.
