Made me laugh:
Yeah tbh I had trouble following the story and understanding what the outrage is about - kind of thought it must be a cultural difference I hadnāt been aware of before.
For a start you are assuming that the people being treated this way had done something wrong.
But doesnāt that just make her a shitty boss?
Bollox. Thereās a massive difference between belittling someone and making them realise their mistake.
The first one makes them feel worthless and useless and actually alienates you from them. The latter still makes them feel bad but at least you still have respect and thereās a chance that they may become part of the solution.
Bingo.
Yep It wouldnāt surprise me if she has assumed that these people know what sheās thinking, despite her not telling them exactly what she wants. Remember this crowd are really trying to reform things. Big change brings different challenges.
Of course I am speculating but Iām also talking from experience. Ms Noo Noo often requires me to fully understand her mind. Iām on a hiding to nothing.
She is clearly a shitty boss. Her behaviour would appear to have gone beyond that. Ministers expressing frustration or displeasure at staff or their work isnt a new or uncommon phenemenon - and I think that is leading to some to misunderstand the significance here as it rarely makes the news. In this case we have a Minister who has left a trail of issues across 3 departments and several experienced and well thought of Officials quitting and legal action being taken.
yeah. If Iām cooking dinner I have to second guess what she fancies. Apparently Iām supposed to know.
Ok, maybe I would have to look more into it.
I guess I was surprised to learn about this ministerial code thing. Some of those guidelines seemed fairly subjective/hard to define to me.
Or maybe Iāve just had too many shitty bosses.
Youāll see I put (as an example). Iām making no assumption. Shouting at somebody for fucking up is acceptable in my book. IF theyāve fucked up. Doing for fun or because youāve had a bad day just makes you a poor manager.
Iād argue that big fuck ups require big bollockings. A dressing down commensurate with the error.
There is no finding in the instance of Patel that anyone did anything wrong or their behaviors required being addressed in some way. In either case Im sure the HO have HR practitioners that are trained to deal with employees failing to meet their contractual obligations, rather than be screamed at.
For all we know Patelās behaviour could have come from differences of approach between staff, but was so significant that Sir Phillip Rutnam actually resigned because of her!
You just cannot shout and scream at someone, like was usual in the 70s whether at work or in āraising kidsā its basic and unintelligent and contributes to poor MH. I suspect a large part of the truth behind this Patel scandal is she just isnt up to the job and is not intelligent enough for the climate in the HO which will no doubt have some impressive CVs and IQs bubbling here and there.
I honestly disagree with the yelling bit.
At the point you get to to justify yelling, I think Is the point where the employee/contractor is not worth pursuing further and itās time to let go.
And at that point thereās no reason to yell.
More news that Johnson attempted to dilute the report; the PM tried to influence an independent report! Dont suppose this was sexed up, but boxed down.
No. Dismissal maybe but it doesnāt need to happen in front of everybody.
Plus youāre still assuming thereās been a screw up. Iād bet in this instance the so called screw up is with Patel not explaining exactly what she wants or even not understanding the implications of what she wants.
If this has been Patelās style of management to dateā¦ She certainly wonāt be able to draw on these type of tactics from here on inā¦ In removing this fear factor to the staffā¦ Is there actually any point in Patel hanging about by her fingertipsā¦ Or is the country once again, just lumbered with another ālame duckā that make up BoJoās Governmentā¦
Yes country is lumbered, actually with almost a cabinet of near-do-wells. Her days are numbered but I guess they will be looking for a low profile exit strategy, a move to DEFRA, then Lord Mayors office before ending up on tills at Lidl.
I think the day I found a former employee putting money from a customer straight into his pocket was a suitable time to shout. Would you agree?
Iām not making assumptions as I keep saying and Iām not defending her conduct as I know nothing about the actually circumstances. Iām simply saying (repeatedly) that there is a time to shout at and demean a member of staff.
