I think an extension could only be granted now if a deal is agreed before hand.

That is a definite risk. It would come down to what pressure the other member states could (or would be willing) to apply.

Suddenly I’m a lot less certain that an extension of time might happen.

One of the things I learned about the EU from climate negotiations is that they absolutely dread having to go back to member states - even the delegates from those member states will do whatever they can to avoid that, because all hell can break loose.

I understood the only extension possible was because of the wording in the WA which set a deadline for requesting the extension to June/July earlier this year. We chose not to do so, so no extension is now possible (if i have understood it correctly).

I think the only exception possible is where a deal has been agreed and is waiting for ratification - but that might depend on what the deal contains as to what can be extended (for example if the deal doesn’t include a deal for services then neither would the extension?).

I’m not so certain; there are a number of hard Brexit Tories who would prefer no deal and would be willing to rebel to achieve their ends. Would Bojo be prepared to risk his standing (accusations of backsliding / weakness etc), and being dependent on Labour / SNP votes against a large block of his own mps, to get it done?

Isn’t is great that this shitshow has even failed its primary aim of ending European discord in the Tory party.
