I don’t really care for the individuals but more about the concept of petty greed. The money he was getting probably wasn’t shifting the needle on his, or their, wealth and so why? Similarly I knew of an individual who probably had in the region of 50 M and was caught trying to pocket 0.4 M through some scheme or another… why, just why? How much is enough? Is it ever going to be enough?
p.s. obviously it is not just the already rich that do this, sadly it is a feature that is all too common in humans
I can remember a government contractor getting caught red-handed helping themselves to government money. They were already very wealthy and the size of the contract was not insubstantial. Maybe some people just can’t help themselves.
He still has a surprising following. It seems to be along the lines of things were better then. That’s probably true, but it was better because of other people’s efforts. He is more responsible than most for things turning to shit.
Doesn’t necessarily make him wrong though. The last thing we need now is yet another change of Prime Minister and the Labour party tearing itself apart again… the Tories proved that changing PMs every year or so leads to oblivion.
Labour should just get on with governing. Individual ambitions and egos should be put on hold and I include Burnham. They are just dancing to Reform’s tune..
Well, this is the problem. And the fact that their recent migration data was far further than anything Reform could have achieved, and yet the Reform supporters are still whining about it, shows that it is a thankless task.
My problem with Starmer isn’t that he is ineffective, but that he isn’t really a politician. He can’t sell what he is trying to do and seems to take the flak for things he is either not responsible for or things that he is actually doing quite well on.
I think Burnham does have that political nous about him, and he is also someone who wants to take responsibility rather than seeking power itself. I recently heard Rory Stewart saying that Starmer would make an excellent Foreign Secretary, and I think he has a point. He has that sharp legal mind and diplomatic demeanour that would be excellent in that role. In fact his foreign policy has been very effective, it’s just that most people inside the UK don’t get to see that.
Yeah, this was kind of what I hoped they would do. Slowly but surely unwind the mess created previously. And credit to them, they are in some respects, but holy crap their communication skills are awful. They’ve completely lost the battle on “truth” it seems, in everything from immigration through to energy.
Plus there’s a few that made easy pickings for those looking at the dirty inner workings of politics. And personally there are a few red flag policies that I’m not liking.
