I think it is to the point that politicians who do not accept donations are regsrded as having something to hide. Of course, these are declared donations. Probity would suggest that an MP should not work in an area that they could influence in favour of a donor, but that would spoil the fun.

Streeting was up to his neck in it. Not 100% on Cooper but I did see something brief on it.
I can just about, with some struggle get my head around the fact politics is a rotten business. I donât like it but thatâs the way it works.
What I donât like is the sneaky private contracts being issued to âsupportâ the NHS. These little payments possibly tie in with that.

Personally, I think all lobbying donations should be stopped and parties should be forced to survive on what they can raise from grassroots individual capped support.
But the counter argument to that is that parties need money to function, run campaigns, pay staff etc. Thatâs not an easy equation to square.
So where we start this debate is register of interests. That way the source of political funding is declared, public, and we can all form a judgement on that. You donât like unions? Fine, you can see what Labour take from Unions and cast your vote accordingly.
The bigger issue comes with undeclared donations, which is what Farage is accused of and Boris kept running into. That isnât just taking money from dodgy sources. Itâs taking money from dodgy sources, and then trying hide that fact so the public canât include that in their decision making.
So when we talk on lobbying and donations. It isnât that everyone is shitting on dinner plates. At least when some partyâs shit on the plates, you can see the shit and decide not to eat the shit. Some of them trying to get away with doing an invisible shit on the plate that you are going to tuck into without realising your are eating a turd, and they are a much, much bigger problem.

I think the simpler explanation would be, if me , you or any other person on this forum did it , we would be privvy to police charges, inland revenue invoice and getting sackedâŚit really is simple, if money is coming in that should not be , ie lobbying etc , then you should be disbarred regardless of oh i declared it.
We have all struggled with energy prices, food prices etcâŚexcept those fuckers from all parties as they get it paid for by the taxpayersâŚabsolute shambles imo
Itâs still too cloak and daggers for me. As an example it should be 100% visible to everyone that Reform are heavily backed by companies with oil interests and they have been asked to represent that view.
Similarly Labour with the Unions and what the unions represent.

It is staggering to me that the UK is so unregulated in this area, particularly with respect to corporate donations. Every other Westminster democracy has addressed them, albeit Australia was surprisingly recent. Unrestricted corporate funding is to my mind toxic for democracy, one need only look at what the venom of Citizens United has wrought in the US.
My suspicion is that Labour is the real factor here, because of the dependence on union money and the lack of a donor culture. That said, in Canada it was the Conservatives who shut down the flow of corporate money a generation ago. In the current configuration, political parties are funded by the public pro rata per vote in the prior election (above a floor level). There are some perverse incentives there, but no one is getting rich from them.
