For all USA residents or those that have a USA political knowledge above casual interest:

If a party loses the election for President, which one of the House or Senate would be the best to secure (The one not selected goes to Presidential party).

Absolutely no question - the Senate. The House gets completely redone every two years. The Senate has 6 year terms with only 1/3rd up in a given election, which means that Senators can outlast a fight with the White House. Plus, the House doesn’t allow filibusters the way the Senate does, so to change control it you really need to swing the balance massively.

One of the challenges the Democrats face this cycle is simply which Senate seats are up for election. It isn’t at all a favourable slate.

Best case scenario desperation to dangle some hope before some severely depressed souls that think another Trump term is the end of the world.

It’s what would have to happen in order for Harris to win. Not impossible (Some more hope for you all).

I count West Virginia that’s definitely lost, Montana in real jeopardy, what else?

Also no real place they can gain apart from long-shot hopes such as Florida and Texas (which basically means no).

Does the House controlling the purse stings not muddy the water? In this case I was thinking from a logical pov that the house being bigger, has more room for negotiation in order to “flip” a few votes.

Yeah, the real issue is the lack of viable pick up opportunities with the collection of seats up for grabs in this cycle. FL and TX are closer than they should be, but neither is likely to get there. And with WV certainly going that already puts them facing being in the minority without having to lose a single other seat.

But as you say Tester is in real trouble and while it’s looking a bit better now OH was always going to be a fight and AZ, PA were not slam dunks (and still arent) either. NE is a bit of wildcard as the Republican may well now lose, but would do so to an independent who is definitely NOT a democrat and so it isnt clear how they would caucus and what impact that would have on the majority.

Not really. A House can be awfully disruptive, but with the collapse of norms that is nothing on all of the appointments that a Senate can hold up. GOP house majorities have done government shutdowns over spending disagreements, but have learned the hard way they get held responsible in fairly short order. Absolutely no one remembers how obstructive the GOP Senate was for Biden’s appointments 3 years on, never mind at the next midterms when some of the Senators responsible face re-election.

I should add to your ‘flip’ comment that the two bodies have had utterly different cultures, at least until very recently. In the words of a friend who spent 20 years as a Senate (R) staffer…‘they are all animals over on the House side’. The House has always been more partisan, and less respectful. Until very recently, the Senate was quite collegial - I have had beers talking about climate change with Imhofe and Sanders environment committee staff. Enormous ideological difference, but friends nonetheless.

On the House side, dissent is punished in an almost mob effect, that has become stronger over the past 50 years. On the Senate side, you simply don’t talk to a Senator that way. There are only 100 of them, you will need their vote at some point on some committee. If you ruin a relationship with a Senator, it might be half a decade before there is an alternative. On the House side, they are running for re-election and catering to their base before they find their offices. If you don’t like them, there is a good chance you won’t need to work with them in a matter of months.

Yeah, fundamentally, the possible Delta is all places the Democrats have right now but are in jeopardy. The 2026 map is a lot more dynamic.

House has better oversight capacity of the white house, but senate is overall a better bulwark in terms of blocking legislation and impacting appointments. The caveat of the latter is Trump realized at the end o his last term that he can just appoint “interim” appointees for everything other than judges and not be forced into going through senate confirmation.

Community, stop harassing her!

So, say Trump goes full Truss tanks the US economy, which is some going, are there any mechanisms to remove him as we were able to do with Truss?

I appreciate there’s many differences including the fact that Trump might make himself unmovable but i’m playing hypotheses tennis here.

Ultimately, the numbers in the US that would suffer under such a mess would be far more dramatic than the UK too I suspect.

Being ringside for this, when the bell goes for round one proper will be interesting… Can’t wait :0)

Laura Loomer launches aggressive attack on MTG after she defended Tony Hinchcliffe’s ‘jokes’ at MSG rally

Story by Gustaf Kilander

Far-right activist and Trump-ally Laura Loomer has attacked Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene with an aggressive rant on social media.

Loomer hit out at MTG on X amid ongoing backlash about racist jokes made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday evening.

The spat came when Taylor-Greene hit back at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s criticisms of Hinchcliffe’s routine that called Puerto Rico an ‘island of garbage’.

“You’re opening for Trump by calling Puerto Rico a floating pile of garbage,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “4,000+ Puerto Ricans died under him. This isn’t the comedy store. You’re using your set to boost neo-Nazis like MTG and stripping women’s rights to the Stone Age. Your ‘sense of humor’ doesn’t change that.”

After the New York congresswoman called out MTG, the Georgia representative posted a short reply: “Have a baby. Choose life this time. You’ll be happier.”

This set Loomer off, who then entered the fray with a barrage of abuse aimed at her fellow MAGA supporter. She referenced a previous spat between the two after Loomer made offensive remarks about Kamala Harris’s Indian heritage.

“Curious how you can call me a racist for saying ‘the White House will smell like curry’ and call for me to be silenced and banned from Trump world… but then you can defend and laugh at @TonyHinchcliffe’z comment about Puerto Ricans being trash,” Loomer wrote on X.

“Can you just be honest that you are a jealous b**** with Roid Rage and you want to sabotage my professional success instead of pretending like you care about claims of ‘racism’?”

“You are such a hypocrite. You are such a jealous washed up hag who doesn’t want any other women to have professional success so you lie and smear them with false claims. You cannot attack me for what I said and then simultaneously defend @TonyHinchcliffe.

“You’re just a lying b****. Hopefully more people come to see it. No wonder why your husband divorced you.”

Stop misrepresenting her, it has nothing to do with the Community, its the notes that are harassing her.

Is he still there? He got rid of 10% of his workforce recently.

It is actually startlingly easy to remove a US President, 4th Section of the 25th Amendment.

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.
