US Election 2024

Used to piss wifey off by ordering a beef shawarma when I was in Bangalore on a particular hindu festival.

As if eating meat wasn’t bad enough on that day.

Would be glad to be proven wrong.

There is a bit of celebration from Republicans in Maine because some high schools here held fake elections for civics class and Trump won the vote by over 10%.

Although I think their joy should carry the caveat that many of the kids, such as the ones I coach, all agreed to vote for Trump because they think it’s funny (for what it is worth I stayed out of conversation completely, I’m there to coach not advise them on their political views).

@Sithbare I still have faith in the American people. Admittedly that faith may get damaged if he wins again.

Anyway, for those who were wondering what the “secret” Trump has related to the house that he spoke about the other night, Elie explains what it likely refers to pretty clearly here

There has been lots of talk about “contingent elections” where if the Electoral College fails to award anyone enough votes that the house delegations decide who will be president, a scenario Trump would certainly win even if the Dems take back the house (because each state gets one vote, not each house member). But that isnt the game plan. Elie clarifies that the 270 EC votes is only needed for a winning majority if ALL EC votes get cast. But if for whatever reasons some states dont finalize their count so their EC delegates are not finalized then the EC can declare a winner with a majority of the votes that are cast. This is why MAGA has put so much energy into getting election deniers inserted in to the county and state level process.

Lets say we end up with a map like this, which is not unreasonable

Trump leads 252 to 251 with GA and PA still waiting to be called. If the county level fuckery can be extended long enough the deadline will pass for the states to extend a deadline and get the votes sent to congress. Assuming this was a normal hold up the house, Mike Johnson, has the option of extending the deadline. But if the goal was to just prevent those getting finished, the house could decide the deadline is the deadline and they will allow the EC to meet with however many votes were ready to be case on that day. At that point, Trump’s 252 is a majority of the votes cast and he wins. And even if the Dems take back the house, this responsibility falls on the current house.

Sure, the SC would certainly be asked to weigh in, and they surely would. But to rule in a way that favoured Trump would be very simple for them, not just because they have heavily signaled already they will do so, but because it would require only them making the same argument they made to give the 2000 election to Bush - there might be remedies that can answer definitively who won, but deadlines are deadlines so we’re going to have to treat the current count as final.

The ‘What’s Cooking’ thread is that way ------>

But a biryani is never a bad idea.

Have a weird feeling Michigan is going to end up a battleground state.

I’ve spent some months there and disconnect between different sets of people within that same state is immense.

Fox being both outraged at the suggestion that “conservative” men would try to dictate the vote of their wives, while one of their panelists claims his wife voting a democrat would be like her having an affair, and being watched by an army of men saying “damn fucking straight we dont allow no Democrat voting in this house”.

It is really quite bizarre, particularly in a university town like Ann Arbor. Michigan demographics and politics are overall run-of-the-mill Midwest, with just a tilt of strong union influence in parts. But you also have a genuine radical left, and a Black-dominated major city. The 3-way difference between Detroit, Ann Arbor, and the Upper Peninsula is bewildering

Yeah , my working place was in Farmington hills , Michigan.

That was a different demographic altogether.

Snowflakes.

Funny story. In 2009 we visited Delhi. At the Red Fort a fairly large group of young kids suddenly surrounded my late bride. My little daughter was scared and started crying. All the kids wanted was to take pictures of my wife because they thought she was…Julia Roberts.

Anyway back to the cooking discussion.
