Hence the near indifference from a HydroQuebec executive at the prospect of a 20% tariff. They won’t even do more paperwork because of it. Americans will just pay more for electricity, and there is no real option of consuming less.
Now, where have we heard that before…?
That did not take long.
I’ve taken some stick in the office this week so I’ll be saving this kind of stuff for the “I told you so” moment.
This is the most positive take I could find now, which is still realistic and sensible and is not in lala-land pretending that everything is going to be okay:

In a twisted way it would be hilarious if Trump bankrupted America.
In truth it would be horrible but I’ll try to take a splinter of joy from watching the epic fail.
Correction. We saw it with covid and it was awful
Counterpoint- never underestimate the Republicans’ ability to place the blame for their failings on the democrats and have the press pretend to take their arguments seriously, holding the Dems to account over it
That is indeed a very good counter point!
You’ll note however that I only said that it was “most positive take I could find now, which is still realistic and sensible and is not in lala-land”. His take may be much too optimistic. But at least it wasn’t a “don’t worry, our institutions are strong and our constitution protects us from autocracy”, kind of post
The (nerdy) thing I keep coming back to is Warren’s campaign in 2020. One of her first big nerdy “I have a plan for that” proposals was a training program to rebuild the state department. By that time it was only 2 years into his presidency and the Department was already in crisis mode, experiencing an exodus of career professionals losing them collectively centuries of critical experience. It was exactly the sort of nerdy problem focused idea that I loved her for, but was necessary after just 2 years of a Trump presidency, and at a time by which he hadnt yet figured out the challenges of topping a government with civil servants who would not break the law for him, or figured out how to get rid of them. Project 2025 has the playbook for that already written. Even if we can get these people out in 4 years, every area of the federal government is going to need one of these programs, and its going to take a decade or more to replace the expertise and experience we are for certain going to lose
That’s all I’ve got to say, for now.
Not sure if anyone else posted, but I also suggest Jon Stewart’s election night takeaway from The Daily Show. You can find on YouTube.
Now, back to looking at flats in Groningen.

This is McKay Coppins, a Mormon Republican, commenting on it being heartbreaking to see young voters encounter the Access Hollywood tape for the first time and process that he still got elected.
The responses
- Fuck you libtard. Your (sic) just angry that you lost.
- Will you also tell you children that Clinton [insert consensual sex act performed in private]?
- Oh, but you have no outrage about Diddy? Hypocrite!
WTF is happening in the brains of these people? Diddy? Does he think Dems voted Diddy for president after finding out he was a monster?
A more complete picture of something I posted earlier this morning - Where Harris campaigned she moved people, but just not far enough to make up for the overall swing right in sentiment the country experienced
Jesus fucking Christ!! Surely they can’t be THAT stupid!! Foreign companies pay for tariffs?!
“Oh please honoured Americans, we will bear all the extra and all tariffs… please accept this gift of our products and we will forever be in your debt”
Classic whataboutism.
So, basically she was a suboptimal candidate
This is how Trump positioned it, even after having made us life through his China tariffs and price increases last time around.
He was pulled up for his misunderstanding of what tariffs are and their impact only once to my knowledge in the entire campaign. That was during his economic forum appearance, and he responded with predictable childish petulance. Most coverage presented him as a dangerous moron out of his depth, but MAGA media presented it as a much needed stinging rebuke to “elitists” who ruined our economy and are only arguing against Trump because he is going to force them out of their cushy positions. So people who encounter MAGA messaging took on that understanding of it.
Lots of people definitely seem to feel that, but I don’t see how these are the data would be used to support or conclude that.
Sure didn’t Mexico pay for the wall
I guess all the elites are on there way from the USA….Babs, Gags, the Boss, Cher….
And Trump will end the war after a day of starting.
Yeah right.
PS good effort by @Nobluff to keep this thread moving against opposing views. I learnt more about the good Ol US of A politics on here than anywhere else. Strapping in for 4 years of “entertainment”
In the Texas State University.
This is what the majority of white women and the majority of americans voted for. Have fun with the new discourse, where not only black people, but also general women, are seen as property.
I have sympathy only for those who voted Harris.
She probably indeed was, but it’s not really her fault but more that of Biden and the party. First of all the biggest albatross she had was Biden and the fact that she never talked about what she would do different to him, instead being loyal. Biden should never have run in the first place and her 100 days isn’t that long. A true nomination process would have given her (or who ever was the candidate they ended up with) more legitimacy and allowed him/her to build his/her own platform. Harris just ran with Status Quo, but Americans didn’t want Status Quo.
