Henderson to help regain a bit of control.
But the rest of the team need to all up their game too.

The worst 45 minutes we’ve had for a long long time. We just continually gave the ball back to them. Our fullbacks have been shocking and the midfield non existent. Henderson and Diaz have got to start second half.

Ali and Van Dijk are the only ones to come out of that with any credit. Don’t think Mane or Salah deserve criticism. The other 7 have been absolutely shite.
Agree with the calls for Henderson and Diaz, the obvious first move to make for Klopp.

They came out with the wrong attitude, right from the start. Thought it was going to be easy, started off slow and gave the early goal away.

Horrific 45 minutes. Everyone playing badly, can’t put this on 1 player. The passing has been the worst I have ever experienced with this team, and close to zero ball control, or ability to keep he ball. Diaz definitely needs to come one, along with Hendo. You can take off any of the front three for Diaz, get them to flip a coin. Same with midfield. Hell, I would sub Trent and Robbo if we could. If this is considered whining, god help us.
Awful display. Both fullbacks are absolutelu awful today, Robbo looks like beer league player. Trent is not much better.
Thiago and Keita - absolutely losing theit battle with players such as Coquelene. Jota invisible. Mane with a horror show.
Passing is atricious, Villareal want it more, we are second best in everything. Another slow start and there is too much arrogance in several players. Someone to wake them. Diaz, Hendo must be introduced as soon as possible.

Klopp needs to make the subs at half time. We can’t wait for the 60th minute.
Second half we need to grab control of midfield. I would be tempted to take off a striker for another midfielder.
Naby needs to come off. Creating undue pressure with poor decisions, positioning and general play. They are overloading our full backs and TAA has been exposed.

From the first minute, we bypassed our own midfield. Klopp’s tactics were obvious to directly look for the front from the back. Didn’t work, but we never changed.
Unless I’m mistaken, I only saw Fab pass once to Thiago. Instead, Villareal would have the ball for one minute, then when we get it back, rather than pass into midfield, we would go long, lose it, and another minute of Villareal with the ball.
Need to be braver on the ball and paly through the middle. The midfield needs to do triangle passes rather than the non-working tactics of looking direct ALL the time.
Case in point: Just before the Villareal claim for penalty, we went long with FIVE of our players standing up front. The ball gets headed to the empty midfield, and Villareal can come forward.
Of course, individual mistakes from Keita and Trent. But Klopp needs to take the blame for these tactics.
Need a change on tactics, and it’s still level in the game. All to play for.

I feel this is where going deep in the domestic leagues has hurt us. So many tired looking passes and efforts, almost a continuation of the Sandcastle game, especially on that left side.
The Athletic got their analysis spot on in their video last week, where our midfielders are drawn forward leaving massive space in the middle of the pitch. Both Thiago and Keita guilty of falling for it.
Certainly we need a tactical tweak, but I am actually concerned how leggy some of our players (Robbo in particular) have looked. What’s the status of Tsimikas?

Klopp needs to change Naby out, the midfield is not doing it’s job, too many turnovers, not getting to the second ball quick enough. We are being beat in the first half by our own game. The whole midfield is just chasing Villarreal players. Both flank is under constant pressure and TAA and Robbo don’t have time to set the plays up. Jota needs to come off too, We need Diaz pace to unsettle their Villarreal backline.
Villarreal is a lesser team, but in Cup competition is who shows up for the match that wins. I still think our boys can pull through but we need to score to instill some confidence in the team.

Agree completely @Worgan. The incessant long balls were confusing for me. I didn’t understand why we didn’t try to work it down the middle with sustained control.
I’d say they mostly succeed in pressing our midfield - their hesitation leads to lost balls -so they play them hasty - just what the press is for.
Mainly we really miss Bobby in this to drop deep and relieve our middle 3. Not shure if Jota is able to.
