Seeing that there is this new crackdown, can I please ask for a clear definition of what “off-topic” is?
As I mentioned earlier, is it “off-topic” to discuss Cherki as an alternative to Wirtz in the Wirtz transfer thread?
Discussion about Wirtz is on topic.
Discussion about korma, German bank holidays and attending Epsom are examples of off-topic.

Context will be important. There’s a who would you buy thread if you just want to talk about random players rather than the one under discussion. If Wirtz figures into the comparison in some relevant way it would be considered on topic.

I wonder why it had taken five years for this crackdown to take place?
Every forum has its own unique culture; it would be a pity if one or two whining malcontents caused this place to lose its culture and die.

In the past two weeks two regular posters have quit the forum citing the amount of repetitive, off-topic drivel clogging up nearly every thread as a major reason - one of whom was one of the most valued posters in the community.
The mod team has, for a long time, been debating how best to handle certain cliques turning every thread into a stream of puns and in-jokes that, to be clear, are incredibly tedious for any non-members of those cliques to have to wade through on a daily basis. As it’s now reached the point of driving valued members away and in all probability putting off new people from joining in the first place, it feels like stricter moderation is our only recourse.
And to be clear, that’s not something we want to be doing. Both because we’ve prided ourselves on taking a lighter touch than other communities when it comes to moderation, but also because it’s a massive fucking ballache to have to police things constantly.
We understand that in the summer with next to no real action to talk about most threads will turn to waffle more than usual, which is why we’ve soft-launched this approach now in the transfer threads only, which are the one place during the summer people want to know that if there’s activity and if they go into the thread, there’ll be some actual relevant news or discussion to read.

I would say its ok to keep some threads on topic. In the summer, the transfer threads are a source of interest and sometimes importance. Logging in to see thirty or forty new posts on Wirtz or Frimpong is misleading when you wade through the feeble humour in those threads.
We all have a sense of humour on here, and its a good forum for that reason. But it is annoying that every thread gets littered with the same predictable shite. Threads get derailed, arguments occur, tangential discussion ensues…all normal stuff. But then theres the consistent half dozen or so posting the same inane dreariness that fucks up reading threads. The standard “ignore” or " scroll past" being the advice if anyone deigns to complain.
Its boringly predictable, the in jokes…

All that nonsense permeating through the majority of threads? Is that our “unique culture”…If so, its confined to a small enough cohort of the membership.
The thing is, I agree with you on loads of issues, refs, PL, City etc etc…but there is duality to all of us. I disagree with you on the view that the culture of this forum is limited to “in jokes”. This is a good place with diverse views and I agree, a sense of humour.
I am probably among the one or two “malcontents” you describe…because I don’t subscribe your vision of TAN. But I am a member on here, with as much right to express opinion as you or anyone else.
I may be a malcontent in your eyes…but in reality I don’t give a flying fuck about that opinion. Its the same as you describing people as fuckwits, its just your “cynical” view.
