Anyone from the attackers?

It is thanks to the attackers, we aren’t having a relegation fight on our hands.

It was a poor second half from the entire team. I’m struggling to elevate Gomez above the rest in terms of poor performance.

I’m not saying he was good. But he wasn’t noticeably more shit that half a dozen other lads on the pitch.

You asked what he did wrong?
He was rooted to the spot for 3 of their goals, exhibiting his trademark turning his back for 2 of them.
And the ball he played to Allison was never on, albeit Allison made an arse of it.
Awful defending, and half a dozen other poor displays don’t excuse it.

Wasn’t the free kick conceded by him as well?

The completely needless one?
Yes.

Gomez had the same game Fabinho did, first 20 were actually good, then his head fell off.

As one of Gomez’s biggest fans I think he’s reaching the point were he isn’t good enough anymore. My big priblem with him is mentality, he seems to crumble when the pressure comes. He’s also done the Skrtel/Lovren thing of becoming a reactionary defender, always trying to win the ball - one of my pet peeves for a CB.

Let’s go goal by goal.

First goal: it’s an outrageous good finish by Vinicius Jnr. I don’t see any defender getting near that, so I’m certainly not holding that against Gomez. There are about six Liverpool players who could put in a tackle during the build up (including Gomez). Why we’ve become so incapable of just putting a foot through the ball, I have no idea.

Second goal: Absolutely fucking wild you are putting that on Gomez. It’s a routine clearance from Ali. Just put it anywhere, but against Vinicius’ shins. Gomez is absolutely entitled to use his keeper in that situation, and have faith he won’t shit the bed.

Third goal: There is culpability everywhere for this. Gomez is one of four lads just stood in a line who don’t move until the ball is in the back of the net. Nunez puts in a weak challenge of Militao, but it’s Trent who has Militao and just allows him to run off him. No idea if this is failure or instruction (due to the zonal system) but it doesn’t look great. It should also be said it’s a really good free kick routine.

Regarding the free kick, defenders give those away all the time. It’s part of the game.

Fourth goal: Again Gomez is one of four players in a line backing off Benzema when it might have been better for one to engage. That’s a collective problem and down to organisation. Gomez is then a bit lazy with the attempted block, but there is also hardlines when they go in. I’ll never slate a defender when a block deflects in. It’s one of those things.

Fifth goal: Oh dear Fabinho. After that, it’s a three on two break Benzema takes it well.

So, for me the issues last night were more collective than individual. Do I think Gomez should be starting? Not ahead of Konate, but just about ahead of Matip. Do I think we should get in another defender to challenge the lot of them? Absolutely.

Pretty sure one of Gomez/Milner will be here next season to have a senior RB cover because we don’t know when and if Ramsay will be ready and trusted.

If Gomez doesn’t want to leave we can’t do anything about it anyway.

That’s funny, cos my peeve last night, with Gomez as much as anyone else, was how reluctant they were to engage an attacker and win the ball. Maybe that’s because they think Madrid are good enough to beat them and holding shape is the better response?

I’ve always said that if Gomez is a cover defender, his biggest asset is that he can slot in anywhere across the back four. Matip, who can only play one of the four, and hasn’t looked that good at that recently, is much more vulnerable. If everyone is fit Gomez wouldn’t be starting big games, but no way would I sell him.

In their heyday, Utd always had a couple of lads like this.

This could be Joe’s downfall… he has become a jack of all trades instead of a master of one.
Not his fault of course because like others in the team, he follows instruction and plays when gets asked to

He has always been a jack of all trades, playing at both full back and CB throughout his career.

As a more defensive option for RB I think he could fine there in a backup role but his days at CB are numbered barring some remarkable turnaround in mentality and playing style.

Ramsay, Mabaya and Bradley will all want that backup RB spot as well of course.

The point is that with Gomez you get cover for across the back four with one squad place. And he is still fairly young, and home grown. It would be madness to proactively sell him.

I would sell Matip, and look to buy a young defender who can challenge Konate and Van Dijk for a starting spot. Gomez would be a cover option across the back four, and I wouldn’t rule out a position opening up at RB, as I still think Trent eventually moves to midfield.

One of Matip/Gomez has to leave.

Even if Gomez survives this summer, he shouldn’t survive more than next season, unless something seriously changes in his performances.

The things he brings to the table cannot be enough to keep him a decade or more at Liverpool Football Club.

Time comes for certain players to be told they’re not good enough anymore, they leave, other players replace them and life goes on.

Big deal.
