We do need a central defender but Not sure he is a good investment at 33 years old. Further more do we really want to do business with Manchester clubs?

And Assaidi.

I don’t know where to put this.

Apparently, we bought this youngster.

I’m going to just toss something out there, because it’s been in the back of my mind for a few months now.

I think we should consider cashing in on Szoboszlai now. He’s a great midfielder who works hard and I appreciate him. But I am worried that he’s not going to sign an extension and is fancying a move to his ā€œdreamā€ club, Real Madrid. He has two full seasons left on his contract now and he’s coming off his best season, which means that his value is at its highest. And there are little things about his leadership style which I find troubling - including tone-deaf reactions to the supporters and social media postings.

I don’t want to overstate this. Ideally, he’d extend because I think he’s a great player. But I suspect he won’t.

If we can cash in on him for a massive fee, and use those proceeds (along with other sales) to buy Wharton AND Anderson, we’ve solved our home grown problem and improved our midfield overall.

It would be a tough sell, of course. But I think Szobo and Wirtz have overlapping skills, and Szobo’s skills are minimized if he’s forced to do more of the dirty work to accommodate Wirtz in the 10.

Just a thought.

An interesting thought too, and I wouldn’t be entirely against it if it meant signing the two you name. But if the fee wasn’t stellar, and we didn’t reinvest well, it’s much better to keep the player.

I do like that we are scouting World wide for young talent.

Szobo is quite good at a number of areas without being great at any. He does have a great engine but that alone is not enough. I think we have to sell him sooner or later anyway if we want to grow a new team.

He is great on free kicks/set pieces and shots from distance in addition to his engine. I do think he is expendable in that I really don’t know what his best position is and how to fit both he and Wirtz into a midfield three. That’s a big problem.

If our new coach switches back to classical 4-3-3, then Szobo will be more useful than Wirtz.

The same case also applies to Macca to some degree. Both Szobo and Macca play better as 8s in 4-3-3 formation.

Agreed. It sounds wild as he has been our best player or one of them, this year.

He runs a lot and has a good shot but he isn“t a player to protect the back four, he isn“t a guy who runs the game with the ball and brings your attacking players into the game, and he doesnt create chances.

They“re the three main functions of a midfield and he excels at none of them. I“d replace him with somebody like Wharton who can run the game.

To be honest I“d happily see us sell, Dom, Mac and Grav. We“d get 150 mil for that lot. Buy a good ball playing CM, a good ball winning CM and welcome back Morton and even Bajcetic to fill the squad for a year with Jones until we can buy cover.

Its not 2015 anymore. Both Grav and Szobo are close to 100m or more.

Guess you hit the nail. He is probably our best midfielder this season and showed his varied skill sets. But unlike Gerrard who is also an all rounder midfielder, he is most known for his dynamic play, his explosive burst of runs onto the ball, into the box, shots like rockets and the numerous time he hauled us back into games. Dom has many good qualities but fall short of being great. Could still become one of course. But a 80mil bid might sway us. But for now, it looks like he is settled here.

Are you talking pesos or AuD?

Well, Szoboszlai cost 60-70m three years ago, and his value has only increased. Gravenberch was one of our key players last year, and if you look at the price tags for Henderson, Wharton, FernƔndez, and Caicedo, key players for top teams now are closer to 100m than 50m.

50m is now more the going rate for players who are just good enough to play in the Premier League. No matter how much you dislike Gravenberch and Szoboszlai, they’re much better than average Premier League players. Selling them for under 80m each is undervaluing them, especially when their replacements would likely cost that much. Both are actually rated around 100m on Transfermarkt. Selling all of them for 150m total is a joke.

Yeah but we might have to pay somebody to take Mac

Somebody would be mad to pay 100 for Grav though or Dom tbh but some idiot probably will

The thing is, Gerrard was an all-rounder and actually wasn“t necessarily a sitting midfielder or a player to run the game like a Scholes, but he was excepcional in a few areas and when we did put him in advanced position, he was able to score and create that Dom could only dream of
